TL;DR

Our favorite shampoo for fine hair is the Living Proof Full Shampoo. This silicone-free, sulfate-free formula gently cleanses to remove oil and product buildup, then adds body without leaving behind a residue. For a more affordable option, consider the L'Oréal EverPure Sulfate-Free Moisture Shampoo, which rivals luxury brands and adds shine and body to thin hair without sulfates or paraben.

A good thickening shampoo is a must for achieving volume and taking your hair to serious heights. According to celebrity hairstylist Anthony Nader, the best formulas for fine or thin hair gently cleanse to remove product buildup, plump the hair shaft, and leave strands full of body without added weight. Ideally, your shampoo should contain volumizing and fortifying ingredients such as biotin (vitamin B7), vitamin B5, keratin, peptides, and thickening polymers. You may also want to look for a silicone- and sulfate-free formula to avoid buildup or over-drying, but that's more a matter of preference.

With the advice and recommendations of expert hairstylists like Nader in mind, we conducted research on the best shampoos for fine hair, evaluating each based on volume-boosting properties, nourishing ingredients, intended hair type, application, effectiveness, weight, feel, scent, and overall value. We also tested a few to see how they performed on fine hair over time to give your hair that oomph you're looking for.

What We Like
  • Adds body and volume with peptides

  • Sulfate- and silicone-free

  • Pleasant, floral scent

What to Consider
  • Not ideal for skipping washes

Key Ingredients: Peptides, amino acids, marine algae, phyantriol | Hair Type: Fine, thin | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Floral, fresh | Size: 2–32 oz

Living Proof makes our favorite hair wash for the fine-haired set. Their Full Shampoo contains the brand's proprietary cleansing complex, which is rich in fortifying amino acids and peptides that plump strands to create a more voluminous mane. This sulfate-free formula is great for a deep cleanse to remove oil, grease, and product buildup, leaving you with clean, hydrated hair ready for styling. It's also silicone-free, so you won't have to worry about added residue. Plus, it contains marine algae, which protects your locks from environmental damage. Just a heads up, it might not be ideal if you don't wash your hair every day, as some have noted flat or somewhat greasy hair when they skipped a wash—though this is pretty common for thin hair.

What We Like
  • Affordable and available at most drugstores

  • Gives limp hair a boost with ginger extract

  • Hair feels soft and clean

What to Consider
  • Can be a bit drying for drier hair types

Key Ingredients: Coconut oil, ginger root extract, glycerin, vitamin E | Hair Type: Fine, thin, damaged | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Floral | Size: 12 oz

This cutely packaged offering from New Zealand-born Monday Haircare is everything we want in a fine hair shampoo at an affordable price. The volumizing formula claims to add body and shine to limp hair with ginger extract-, vitamin E-, and coconut oil-infused formula. It gives your hair that added volume you're after without weighing it down. We also appreciate the handy pump bottle, which you can recycle once it runs out. It can be a bit drying, especially if you have dry hair to begin with, so we recommend following up with a deep conditioner on the ends of your hair.

Adi Giesey, beauty editor with 1C hair: “This is my favorite drugstore shampoo because it reminds me of an expensive product in a fun, value-sized bottle. Over the years, it has quickly become one of my most recommended products and garnered the most compliments.”

What We Like
  • Boosts shine and protects color-treated hair

  • Minimizes flyaways and static

  • Stimulates scalp with refreshing rosemary

What to Consider
  • Can be a little drying

  • Contains silicones which can weigh down hair

Key Ingredients: Rosemary botanicals | Hair Type: Fine, dry, color-treated | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: No | Scent: Original | Size: 8.5–23 oz

Those with colored-treated hair may already appreciate a sulfate-free formula as it doesn't strip the hair. L'Oréal EverPure Moisture Shampoo checks that box and then some. Aside from preserving color, preventing dullness, and adding shine, it offers a deep yet nourishing clean—the result: Hair that's glossy, bouncy, and full. Our tester, Ashley, used it regularly for years and said it absolutely worked to keep her hair color vibrant for longer—and still lathers despite being sulfate-free. This drugstore option is good enough to rival most luxury options; we suggest using it only a few times a week since it can be a bit drying.

Ashley Rubell, writer and hair stylist: "I was surprised by the results I got from using this shampoo. The first time around my hair felt immediately softer, even while it was still wet."

What We Like
  • Repairs broken bonds in hair follicles to help thicken

  • Works well on all hair types

  • Lathers amazingly well and smells amazing

What to Consider
  • Works best when paired with other Olaplex products

  • No large size available

Key Ingredients: Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate | Hair Type: All | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Sweet citrus | Size: 3.3–8.5 oz

Touchable, softer hair? Sign us up. Olaplex's No.4 Bond Shampoo is part of a multiple-step system to repair and revitalize damaged, brittle strands, leaving them stronger and healthier. This means more manageable hair, fewer split ends, and all-around gorgeous hair. The formula is especially great for thinning hair as it helps mend broken bonds and encourage healthy growth, but it really works well on all hair types. It even seems to help color last longer. We're also big fans of the sweet, citrusy scent. We just wish it came in larger sizes, but we've noticed a little goes a long way with this shampoo.

Loren Savini, writer: “I love how healthy and fresh my hair feels after using the Bond Maintenance shampoo. It’s a relief to find a nourishing product that actually works on all hair types (I often feel like we thin-haired folk are left behind). My hair went from feeling brittle and frayed to smooth, shiny, and healthy—without having to sacrifice any volume.”

What We Like
  • Keratin-infused formula strengthens

  • Encourages healthy growth with biotin

  • Prevents dullness and fading

What to Consider
  • Scent too strong for some

  • Not ideal for every-other-day washing

Key Ingredients: Biotin, chia seed oil, hydrolyzed keratin | Hair Type: Fine, thin | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Mercer Street | Size: 10–32 oz

Ouai's Fine Hair Shampoo will strengthen your hair from roots to ends and bring your color back to life (or at least prevent it from getting washed out). Containing biotin and keratin, it does everything from hydrate to encourage new growth. We think it's a perfect match for fine-haired folks, but this shampoo works well for all hair types needing color protection and revitalizing measures. This shampoo boasts the brand's Mercer Street fragrance. It's a delightful scent with a musky citrus base and subtle floral notes, which we love but may be too much for some.

Adi Giesey, beauty editor with 1C hair: "This duo is perfect if you are looking to add extra volume and hydration but not weigh down your strands. Plus, it’s in the brand’s iconic Mercer Street scent, which lasts for days post-wash."

Key Ingredients: Apple cider vinegar, argan oil, glycerin | Hair Type: Fine, oily | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Fruity | Size: 12 oz

Having fine and oily hair can feel extra challenging, as your hair often ends up flat and greasy. When testing the best shampoos for oily hair, this one stood out as a winner for those with fine hair. The sulfate-free formula uses organic apple cider vinegar to balance the scalp and increase shine, while argan oil nourishes your hair without weighing it down. Our tester saw a reduction in oil right away, and she could go for four days without washing her hair while using this product.

Christine, tester with fine, oily hair: "I like how clean and light my hair and scalp feel. It's strikes a perfect balance of oil control with volume and shine."

What We Like
  • Formulated with hydrolyzed vegetable and keratin proteins

  • Polymer blend leaves hair feeling thicker

  • Helps repair damage with various proteins

What to Consider
  • Doesn't lather well

Key Ingredients: Lupine protein, saw palmetto extract | Hair Type: Fine, thin | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Côte d'Azur | Size: 8.5 oz

Yes, Oribe is undoubtedly expensive, but it always makes for a supremely luxurious hair-washing experience. The brand's Magnificent Volume iteration is all kinds of wonderful: super frothy and really light with a fragrance reminiscent of designer perfume (bergamot with jasmine and sandalwood). Instead of sulfates, it contains body-building polymers to plump up the hair shaft and create weightless, bouncy volume. Vegetable and lupin proteins are in the mix to strengthen hair and repair damage. We love that it's paraben and sulfate-free, but we wish it lathered better.

What We Like
  • Strengthening and hydrating formula with vitamin B7

  • Leaves hair feeling full and soft

  • Sulfate- and paraben-free

What to Consider
  • Thickening results aren't dramatic

Key Ingredients: Collagen, biotin, hydrolyzed wheat protein | Hair Type: Fine, dry, thinning | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: No | Scent: Floral | Size: 13 oz

Finding a volumizing shampoo that hydrates is challenging, as added moisture often weighs hair down. That's why we're enamored with this unicorn formula from OGX. Instead of coating the hair, it penetrates the hair shaft with vitamin B7 and hydrolyzed wheat protein, bringing it back to life and making it full and plump from the inside out. You'll be left with subtle thickness and an all-around soft feel, but the results aren't super noticeable.

What We Like
  • Makes hair look and feel fuller

  • Boosts shine

  • Strengthens and nourishes with biotin and Vitamin B5

What to Consider
  • Scent too perfume-y for some

Key Ingredients: Vitamin B5, coconut oil, biotin, saw palmetto berry extract | Hair Type: Fine, thin | Sulfate-Free: Yes | Cruelty-Free: Yes | Scent: Dark Waves | Size: 2–33.8 oz

This product is for you if you want big, bouncy, old Hollywood blowout hair. R+Co's Dallas Shampoo is infused with biotin, vitamin B5, and saw palmetto (often included in hair growth supplements) and claims to add touchable volume and serious shine. It's also one of those rare formulas that creates volume while still nourishing the hair, so it's ideal if you're dealing with damage or dryness. Combining citrus and woody notes with a hint of spice, the brand describes the Dark Waves fragrance as a "warm, romantic scent." We're all about it, but if you're sensitive to fragrance in cosmetics, you may want to skip this one.

What to Consider When Buying Shampoo for Fine Hair

  • Volume-Boosting Ingredients: According to Nader, there are quite a few ingredients you can look for if you have fine hair and want to work in some volume. He suggests a formula with vitamin B5, polymers, biotin, hyaluronic acid, and botanicals like ginseng and ginger.
  • Ingredients to Avoid: What's left out of the formula is just as important as the ingredients list. While not a hard-and-fast rule, silicones (like dimethicone) can sometimes contribute to buildup, so if you have fine hair, it might be worth avoiding them. Other ingredients to avoid include sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which can be drying, and various oils, which can weigh down your strands.
  • Scent: Shampoos are, more often than not, super scented. While we love a perfume-like fragrance that makes strands smell incredible, we recognize not everyone does. Fragrances can also irritate the scalp, which could make it hard for already thin hair to grow. If you have a sensitive scalp or know you're sensitive to fragrances, opt for an unscented option.

How We Tested Shampoos for Fine Hair

Ouai Shampoo + Conditioner for Fine Hair

Byrdie

Over the years, we've tested hundreds of shampoos in our lab and across our team of editors and writers. When evaluating which formulas are best for fine hair, we considered the following:

  • Lather: Fine hair can get tangled more easily, so we looked for formulas that lathered in the shower without tangling our hair.
  • Effectiveness: Fine hair tends to get greasy faster, so we paid extra attention to how well the shampoo cleaned our hair and removed buildup. We also noted how many days we could go without washing our hair. At the same time, we avoided shampoos that dried out or stripped our hair.
  • Volume: We gravitated towards formulas that gave us more fullness and volume at the roots.
  • Hydration: We looked for formulas that gave our hair the moisture it needed without weighing it down.
  • Color-safe: Since many of us color our hair, we looked for color-safe formulas and paid attention to whether they dulled or stripped our color.
FAQ
  • What other ingredients should you look for in a fine hair shampoo?

Shampoos that also provide strengthening elements will help prevent further thinning and breakage. Nader says to look for formulas containing biotin, vitamin B5, polymers, and hyaluronic acid. There are also caffeine shampoos that promote and stimulate hair growth.

  • How often should you wash fine hair?

You may only want to wash fine hair every other day since daily washing can dry it out. However, waiting longer than every second day could lead to product buildup or oiliness that weighs hair down, making it look flat or greasy. Try different shampooing schedules to see what works best for you.
