Loose Curls: 5 Secrets to Getting Perfect, Bouncy Hair

Why it may be time to dust off your hot rollers

If your Pinterest "Hair I Aspire To" board is filled with big, bouncy curls, you're in luck because I've scored the secrets from celebrity stylists to help you get the perfect hair, ala the Duchess of Cambridge herself, Miss Kate Middleton.

A Good Blow-dry is Key

If there's one beauty trick to master, it just might be the professional blow dry. Knowing how to dry your hair properly saves time and leaves you looking effortless every time. And it's a must when it comes to big, bouncy curls.

For bouncy curls, I recommend using a big round brush to blow dry hair.

Find out how to give yourself a great blowout in my article, The Perfect Blowout: How to Blow Dry Your Hair Like a Professional.

Dust Off Your Hot Rollers

I know, I know. Hot rollers. Sooooo 1989. The last time my hair was rolled into these things I was a junior in high school and The Cure was playing on all the cool kids' Walkmen (Walkmans?). But they truly are your best bet for getting big, bouncy curls.

Hot rollers are in again, just ask model Anna Speckhart, who shared her hot roller how-to with my favorite beauty blog, Into the Gloss. Her hot rollers of choice are the simple and basic Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Ceramic Rollers. For big, bouncy waves on long hair, go for the jumbo rollers (buy them from Amazon). For a more natural look or if you have shoulder-length hair, you might opt for the multi-sized hot rollers (buy them from Amazon).

Speckhart starts by rolling the top layer of her hair from the back and then she moves on to the sides. She says on Into the Gloss, "While they set, I throw on a face mask (I'm currently crazy for the Shiseido White Lucent Power Brightening Mask), eat breakfast with one hand, and check Instagram with the other."

Your curls should be done in 15 minutes, she says. Once the rollers are removed, finger comb them into place and spritz with hairspray.

The Right Products are a Must

No matter your hair texture, bouncy curls are within reach, but you need the right products to make them look perfect.

For fine hair, apply a volumizer, like a mousse or a volumizing spray. Mousses, like hot rollers, are hot again because unlike in my hot roller days, they are now formulated in a way that won't make your hair crunchy.

For frizzy and curly hair, hair serums and straighteners are your best bet. Apply the straightener before you blow dry, and palm a few drops of serum over your curls when they're out of the rollers.

Find out how to get loose, soft curls using these step-by-step instructions.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Prep hair with a styling spray (I love Bumble and Bumble's Thickening Spray, which works wonders on fine hair). Spritz on roots and comb through hair.
  2. Part hair down the center.
  3. Blow dry hair, scrunching hair as you go. If you have curly hair, don't scrunch, instead dry straight with a paddle brush.
  4. When hair is about 90 percent dry, separate hair as you would to create two pigtails. Secure pigtails with pony tail holders.
  5. Take one side and twist hair in one direction. Hair will naturally twist itself into a bun. Secure at ear level with a ponytail holder. You can keep hair in place with bobby pins.
  6. Repeat on the other side, so you have two buns at ear level.
  7. Blast the buns and your whole head with the dryer for about 5-10 minutes or until hair seems dry.
  8. Leave hair in buns for 10-20 minutes to set. Just before you leave, take hair out of buns and finger comb curls. (Do not brush out). You can apply a texturizing spray to separate the waves and keep them from looking "too perfect."
  9. Spritz hairspray and you're done!

What You Need:

  • Styling spray for regular hair or volumizing spray for fine hair to prep hair
  • Blow dryer
  • Ponytail holders
  • Texturizing spray
  • Hairspray
