The Low Carb Burger
In Time For New Year's Resolutions, Fast Food Goes Low CarbWith the start of the New Year comes a new set of resolutions, with most revolving around losing those holiday pounds. While diet programs come and go, the most popular ones all seem to share one common factor: they cut out the carbs. Statistics show that nearly 32 million Americans are on some type of carb-reduced diet. From Atkins to The Zone to The South Beach Diet, more and more people are passing on the bread in favor of higher protein foods.
Now, even the fast food industry is catching on. Burger chains Hardee's® and Carl's Jr.® have unveiled low carb burgers in time for the new year. Hardee's has added the Low Carb Thickburger to its menu, while Carl's Jr. has added the Low Carb Six Dollar Burger. The lettuce-wrapped burgers are served without the bun, but with all the trimmings -- minus a bit of ketchup and dill pickles instead of sweet pickles to cut down the carbs.
Hardee's is unveiling their new "Thickburger." Hardee's regional vice-president was inspired with the idea when, wanting to shed a few pounds himself, he began taking the bun of his burger. The pounds came off and a new burger was born. Besides removing the bun, the Thickburger features an iceberg lettuce wrapping, reduced amounts of ketchup and dill pickles instead of sweet.
The result: A Thickburger with only five grams of carbohydrates and a Six Dollar Burger with only six grams of carbs.
