My New Haircut Unveiled

Tuesday August 5, 2008
As you can see here (taken by my iPhone, terrible quality), I have jumped on the shoulder-length hairstyle bandwagon. My stylist Antonio Gonzales at Eva Scrivo in NY and I merged two popular cuts right now: bangs and shoulder-length hair. This cut looks great wavy or straight, but as with most cuts, it took me a few tries to figure out how to style it.

And for all of you pleading with me to change out my photo, that's high up on list of prios right now.

Your hair cut is great! It took years off your face, You look great! Tell us how you style it, and what kind of cut it is. I wouldn’t mind having mine done like that.

(15) Kathleen says:

Absolutely fantastic! Great cut – it shows off your face so well and really is a stylish cut. Thanks for sharing it with us – I’ve been curious after your comments and then always still seeing the ‘old’ photo. This is youthful and fresh looking without being ‘trying’. Great job! Tell us if it is easy to care for and how brunettes could handle it.

(18) Hannah says:

nice cut, Julyne! I recently went for a short hair cut too but couldn’t stand the bang – it just didnt look right on me and doesn’t stay down. nothing can make it stay, so i have to part side way again, which is the same old hair style. hated mine… :(

August 11, 2008 at 8:20 pm
(19) Jennifer F. says:

You look fresh and younger with your new haircut! Not that you looked “old” before! It takes a brave woman to lose that much length in one haircut session-I know, I’ve been a hairdresser for many years. Hope you are experiencing that “free and bouncy” feeling! I know that many of your readers will follow your lead!

August 11, 2008 at 9:01 pm
(20) Shan says:

Finally! Phone pic or not… you look lovely! The color is very natural and the cut suites your pretty face. The length really suits your face and LOVE the bangs.

I think I may take your pic in to my hairdresser and ask her for a Julyne!

(28) Michelle says:

I love the new look !!!!! Not only does it make you look younger, but it’s also a very fresh look.

My looks are similiar to yours (blonde hair – just below shoulder length & no bangs). I wore bangs for years, but i have naturally curly hair & they seem to frizz out in any type of humid weather.

I would love to cut my hair like yours (in fact i am going to take a copy to my hairdresser very soon to see if it can be done).

My question is: with very curly hair, how can i get my bangs to lie flat & straight. Can you recommend a product ?

I LOVE THE NEW CUT !!!!!!!! WHAT A POSITIVE CHANGE !!!!

August 12, 2008 at 12:04 pm
(29) beauty says:

Hi Michelle, thanks so much for the compliment! Now let’s see if I can advise you…

As you have learned bangs are tricky on naturally curly hair. In fact, women with curly hair are usually advised to not get bangs because they tend to frizz up.

If you want to attempt them, I would suggest a flat iron. It’s not perfect, but flatirons are your best bet when it comes to straightening curly hair on your own. You could get a professional straightening job from a salon as well. But it’s pricier.

As for product, I prefer Bumble and Bumble. They have products for curly hair. Kerastase has nice products as well.

Good luck!

Julyne, I love it! I cut my hair into that sort of style right before I got my site photo done. I’ve always been a bangs girl so I think your shoulder-length cut with the bags is great! Welcome to the trendy shoulder-length hairstyle club! I can’t wait to see your updated site photo too!

(35) dd says:

I left a comment the other day, where did it go? I have to say I don’t like it. I would never believe you were a beauty editor if somene showed me this. Did you evev try to do anything to it?

August 15, 2008 at 6:29 pm
(36) beauty says:

DD –

You sound like my best friend who is always harping on me to pay more attention to my appearance. “You’re a beauty editor!” he says.

But it’s just not me.

If you met me in person, you’d see I don’t need a lot of makeup or big hair to get attention. I’m tall, blonde and have a strong personality. I prefer a more natural appearance.

Also, I’m a beauty editor based on my writing skills and knowledge, not my flashy appearance — as I tell him to no avail. I do quite well for myself without a lot of trouble.

Thanks for reading!

A great look. Are you getting carded now? That was my experience with bangs a few years back. Vinnie, my hair guy, won’t cut bangs on me because he says “You wouldn’t take care of them right.”

(40) Moi says:

how do you keep shoulder length hair from flipping out? i have mine about that length but whenever it dries it always looks like a 50s bob and the ends flip out.

?

September 11, 2008 at 7:26 pm
(41) beauty says:

Hi ‘Moi’:

The secret to the non-flip-out is a flat iron. You iron the hair as flat as possible. It also helps to dry hair as flat as possible first. Use a styling spray, to help make fine hair more manageable.

(44) Linda Miller says:

Love the new style on you. I agree with the previous post in that it shaves years from your look. I would like to know if this was a simple blow dry style, or did you use a flat iron to achieve the very natural look.

March 23, 2009 at 11:03 pm
(45) beauty says:

Hi Linda,

thanks for the compliment. I now have a shaggy, chin-length bob which I love even more than this cut, believe it or not.

Because my hair is super straight, Antonio achieved the look pictured here with just a blowdryer and a brush.
