Skincare Must for Your Teens

Monday June 2, 2008
There is no more important time in your life for taking care of your skin than in your teens and 20s. What you do now will make or break your skin when you are decades older. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Your number one problem is likely acne. If you are suffering from annoying outbreaks, go to a dermatologist. It's time well-spent.

2. You are likely drying out your skin. At this age, skin can feel gross and oily, and you probably worry that all those oils are causing acne, so you are overcompensating with drying toners and over-the-counter acne medicines. Stop. Use a mild cleanser instead (gel for oily skin and cream for dry skin). Keep in mind that "tight" skin really means dry skin.

3. You may love the sun. Who doesn't love a tan? But tans can add up to sun damage, which is the number one cause of wrinkles when you are older (smoking is bad for skin too). Never leave home without sunblock of at least SPF 20 on your face and other bits exposed to the sun. Your 35-year-old self will thank you later. And please, stay out of tanning beds! They are really cancer beds. Stick with bottled tans or spray tans for big occasions.

True story - I started moisturizing and avoiding sun exposure at 18 - I am 61 and most people think I am between 40 and 45 - they can’t believe I have a 37 year old daughter!
