Curly Hair? Create Soft Waves With a Flat-Iron

Monday May 12, 2008
If you have naturally curly hair, consider taming your curls by creating waves. My friend Laura did this to her curly hair for her wedding rehearsal dinner and she looked amazing. She said her stylist showed her how to do it. Her directions went like this: Blow-dry hair straight. As you straighten hair with a flat-iron, wind the flat-iron so it creates big spiral waves. Change directions with each section of hair. By the way, Laura (of Armenian and German descent) used to straighten her coarse hair with every washing but friends have convinced her to embrace her curls and she's never looked better.

why does everyone have to straighten curly hair? did I miss something somewhere? what’s wrong with curls? every make-over show straightens curly hair. it’s just not right.

I have thick, curly, tight, kinky hair. Every folicle seems to want to go in a different direction. What’s more, I’ll have kinky, washboards, and tight curls on each strand. Additionally, it doesn’t seem to grow much below my bra strap, and even at that, it shrinks up to about the bottom of my neck if left on its own.

If I let it dry naturally I get a big loose poofball, with a tiny bit of tight curl. Nothing is predictable, and it won’t dry anywhere near symmetrical or even.

So I blow it dry (big poofy mess)then either flatten it with a flat-iron, or curling iron. No one has seen my so-called “real” hair except my husband.

So, to sum up, not all “curly” hair is nice curly hair. Some of it can be pretty awful, messy stuff. Like mine!

I absolutely agree with Cathy, my hair is like hers and never looks anything even faintly resembling nice, unless I straighten or curl it. For Annette, you must either have straight hair or perfect curls or waves, because not all curly hair can be made to look nice.

I tend to agree with Annette…..doesnt matter how curly your hair is……if you get the right cut and use correct products your hair will be beautiful…takes experimenting but it can be done….BTW…I have very curly hair

Hi,
I have very curly hair & now it looks great. I used to dye it too much & it became very damaged. I have a daugther who has close to perfect naturally wavy hair. She hates it. Friends suggested for her to go with it as I do. She recently had it relaxed & spent $275 to do it. It looks ok, but her hair looked much better naturally wavy.

I agree that for too long most people dry their hair straight or are spending loads of $ on the Japanese straightening. I can see a lady doing this if her hair is so out of control, extremely frizzy & no matter what you do, it looks bad.

I am 51 & when I was younger the style was to have long, straight blonde hair. For yrs. I tried to do that to my hair, because I was brainwashed that was what was beautiful. All it did was ruin my hair for a long time. But I am very happy to see women of all nationalities these days who represent beauty. Since when is just straight hair the icon of beauty?

I live in Chicago & many women bleach their hair blonde & either straighten it themselves or pay outrageous prices to get it relaxed or professionally straightened. I don’t cave into that anymore. I wasted too much time & too many yrs. not accepting my beautiful curly hair.

I have to say that I agree with some of the other women. Most of the time when you get the right haircut & style, don’t use alot of chemicals & use the corrrect products for your hair, it can look good. There are also some women who really have a problem with kinky out of control hair & need special help with a relaxer. I’m not knocking women with naturally straight hair. Straight or curly, healthy hair looks good. Not hair that is constantly damaged by flat irons & too many chemicals.

I do hope that 1 day, my daughter can accept her wavy hair. Her hair was so nice that she could be in some ads & commercials for it. But now it is straight & dry. She now has to still dry it downwards to keep it straight + use a flat iron. This is after she paid so much to relax & straighten it. She still has to work so hard. All I do is air dry my natural curls. I have better things to do with my time then to worry about straightening my hair every day. I also look different from many of the clones around here. Take care, everyone. Judy K. Chicago.

I agree with Cathy. Very few people have seen my hair just air dried in it’s complete natural state. it’s curly, it’s wavy, it’s just a big fro. like really big. try 3 - 4 inches big. I generally have to straighten it or use TONS of mousse and product to get it all curly looking and to lay flatter and not 3 inches big. I tend to do my hair differently everyday.. some days staight, some days curly. I have always wanted the big, loose wave. a sort of nice controlled bedhead. It has never worked for me. the instructions given here sound like a time-consuming nightmare that won’t yield any results.
