7 Reasons There Aren't More Preservative-Free Cosmetics

Wednesday April 30, 2008
When I first started researching natural, organic products a few years ago there were Burt's Bees, Dr. Hauschka and a few lather-less shampoos on the market. Now every product seems to be going green and you have to watch what's truly organic or not. Simply slapping the word "organic" on your brown, recyled paper product boxes doesn't mean a thing. But I digress.

Over on "The Beauty Brains" blog, there's a great article on 7 Reasons There Aren't More Preservative-Free Cosmetics. I had been wondering about this myself and figured fresh stuff simply goes bad (I once had to refrigerate a lotion for rosacea and it inevitably got lost among the Worcheshire sauce and the many varieties of mustard). The bloggers behind The Beauty Brains have science degrees backing their claims, so it's a good blog to bookmark.

I don’t worry all that much about some things, but I do want skin care products that are paraben-free, fragrance-free, and without artificial colors of any kind.

This article “7 Reasons There Aren’t More Preservative-Free Cosmetics” from “The Beauty Brains” blog is ridiculous! It sounds like an add for the big cosmetic industry/ corporations. We’ve been fooled into believing that the more chemicals the better. Eat them, apply them all over your skin, spread them all over your house, spray your lawn with pesticides…but you’ll be just “fine” because they are safe. And about the growing cancer rates, asthma and allergies? Hmmm…How about the high doses of parabens isolated from breast tumors? Really, it is common sense to try and reduce exposure to preservatives and chemicals. But this article does not seem to have any common sense. It’s insane to suggest that you can get tetanus from cosmetics gone bad! I do not think the bloggers behind the Beauty Brains have science degrees. It doesn’t seem they passed college Microbiology.

Ioana, what reason would makeup companies have for promoting the use of preservatives if they were really unnecessary? There’s a big push for greener, preservative-free products in the market right now, so it seems to me that the makeup producers would love to supply that demand if it were possible.

I think that homemade cosmetics work a lot better than expensive labels such as Clarins, CD, Clinique. I tried them ALL. Just try a honey or oat mask and see for yourself. And yes, they go bad after a couple of weeks, but so do milk and yogurts and eggs and that is no reason to start drinking and eating canned food every day for the rest of your life.
