That Perfume Cost $150? What You're Really Paying For
Monday April 28, 2008
Thank you everyone for weighing in on my post a couple weeks ago about signature scents. 62-plus comments were recorded and I enjoyed reading about fragrances that have been staples in your beauty cabinets for 20 years and sometimes more. Some of you are even into layering scents, which is an art unto itself and one I will never master.
A couple of people were appalled that my favorite scent, Bond No. 9's "Scent of Peace", costs upwards of $120. It's true. It's absolutely ridiculous, and I justify the price based on how much each spritz costs me. Right now we're averaging about a dime a spritz and it's worth it. So why are some perfumes more expensive than others? What you're paying for is largely the packaging (I'm not into Scent of Peace's purple bottle at all, but whatever) and sometimes a rare blossom. My assumption is the rare flower in Scent of Peace grows in the northernmost region of a remote island off the coast of Anguilla. My guess is it takes a sherpa, a strong paddler and a very dainty sack to bring back the blossom that grows between two particular rocks and can be plucked only in January. The scent feels that fresh to me. And that's really what counts.
Check out this article on the Most Expensive Perfumes in the world. Find out why one bottle cost a whopping $215,000.

I agree, I only wear the best perfumes and I have allergies. I wear Bond No. 9 exclusive Sak’s Fifth Ave scent. Now try that one. Everywhere I go someone walks up to me and ask what hell you have on and I just tell them something else. I also wear Creed. I want to smell different and I do everyday! You get what you pay for.
