How to Find the Right Lipstick Shade
Wednesday October 31, 2007
November's Oprah Magazine has a Q&A that I knew the answer to because I've read all of Bobbi Brown's books (I am a beauty expert, eh?). The question was posed to Bobbi Brown: "How do I find the right neutral shade of lipstick?" Her answer: Never choose a shade based on skin or hair color. Instead, look to the natural color of your lips. The best lipsticks will be just a shade or two darker than your natural color. This is why that great shade of red that looks so fabu on your best friend looks hideous on you.

That’s not an answer. I have pink lips. But my daughter tells me gloss Mom, not lipstick. Lipstick is old-fashioned, she says.
I believe in tinted glosses myself. NO lipstick color looks good on me, I have full lips and putting COLOR on them is just TOO much. I agree with Brenda’s post.
I’ve switched from lipstick to tinted gloss too. More subtle, less drag queen/harsh looking. I think it’s sexier too.
Yes, it is a stupid comment, because color tones could be “off” meaning it could look muddy or too orange or too pink for your skin…and the older one is, the clearer the shades should be so that a lady doesn’t look dead or overly made up. BTW gloss doesn’t last like a color.
I always choose a lipstick or gloss according to how it looks on me. Dark shades of any color look awful; med. to light - much better. Also consider the color tone and coverage (sheer, etc.)
I’M A “PAST COVER MODEL” AND I FEEL THE LIPSTICKS IN THE ROSE/MAUVE COLORS LOOK WONDERFUL ON ALL SKIN TONES !!!
DON’T CARE FOR “LIP GLOSS”—TOO STICKY & GOOEY !!!
I have tried almost all brands of lipsticks from the very expensive to the least expensive and the one that is my favorite just happens to cost 99 cents at my local drugstore. It doesn’t dry my lips, stays on my lips, and the shade is buff which is about two shades darker than my lips.
I am not sure that I agree with Bobbi Brown on this one. I have tried the one or two shades darker than my own lip color and most of them make me look washed out.
I go with the mauves tones myself. I have very full lips, alot people pay a lot of money to get full lips, so Im certainly not going to down play them
i have a full lips and i mix but the lipstick and the lip gloss,it depends on how u apply it.just little will do.
If you believe the salespeople at Sephora, lipsticks are coming back in. I think they’re saying that because they want to sell more of them. Personally, I like lipstick because it stays much longer than gloss. — Julyne
I love gloss but sometimes you just need a really nice lipcolor that gloss sometimes cant give you. The lipstick can be used with the gloss also. I like to use the lipstick as the base and then add shimmer with the gloss.
