Will Short Hair Ever Be Popular Again in the U.S.?

Wednesday September 26, 2007
Just got my bangs trimmed at Eva Scrivo and Antonio Gonzales (my stylist, check out his blog) mentioned he just got back from London. Life as a stylist must be very interesting abroad because apparently women there aren't afraid to go short. Here, in New York, few young women under age 40 dare to go above the ears.

According to Antonio, women here get haircuts that flatter their face shapes, whereas in London, stylists can cut short hair into works of art, in effect changing the shape of the head with a cut. When I mentioned this my friend Steven, he wrinkled his nose and said, "Ewwww, you mean like Victoria Beckham?" Yes, Steven, like Victoria Beckham. Personally, I love edgy cuts. My absolute favorite look right now is heavy bangs on dark hair contrasted against milky white skin. I spotted a Japanese woman in a deli recently who had bangs that weren't evenly cut and the effect was striking.

Victoria B. can handle a cut like that because she is wealthy. Victoria can make her face look good with any hair cut. It helps to have a hair stylist and a makeup artist. I’ve seen people who have gotten the Victoria cut and personally, to me it looks really bad. However, I have to give them kudos for stepping out of the box.

A lot of girls I know chose the Victoria Beckham’s haircut and the look amazing.
It looks much much better with dark hair.
Oh, and yes, I m from Europe ;)

It’s true that Posh has a team of people, but it’s not impossible to look amazing and there are sites like welovebeauty.com where celebrity makeup artists and hair stylsits show you how they do the hair and makeup for their star clients. They even have video. It’s not impossible, it’s just knowing how.

Personally… despite turning cuts into works of art, short DOES NOT work on everyone. As someone who has pulled off some of the most ridiculous hair cuts (I had an 80’s glam mullet in 2004… A short spikey cut with a long piece on the left side towards the lower back that was dyed to have racoon stripes in 2005, etc) I’ve seen some amazingly DONE cuts that just look RIDICULOUS on those lacking the correct facial structure.

I agree your facial shape plays a very important role, as well as facial
features you want to highlight or hide away - your individual features should
determine a complimentary

short haircut
.

Personally, I’ve kept my hair short and edgy for several years. The hair stylists in Lex., Ky, are very good about finding what fits you. I’ve gone edgy short and with color. And you have to have the face for it.

My 14 year old daughter just did the Beckham cut. And she loves it.

I think it makes a statement if you can step out of the box and do it.

HI I HAVE DARED SHORT HAIR FOR THE BETTER PART OF MY LIFE. MY HAIR IS VERY SHORT AND TEXURED AND I LOVE IT. WOMEN AFTER 50 SHOULD NOT HAVE THAT LONG HAIR, IT DRAGS THEM OUT AND MAKES THEM LOOK OLDER THAN THEY ARE. A GOOD HAIR CUT IS WONDERFUL AND YOU ALWAYS HAVE GOOD HAIR DAYS!!!! THANKS

The great thing about hair is that whatever you do with a good or bad cut - it grows out. Mine grows much slower than it did when I was a child but there is still hope. Most women over 50 look best with hair no longer than their collarbone.

Short hair has never gone “out of style”, emphasis has been put on the younger crowd, as has been done in the past, but a lot of us women like the convenience of shorter hair, don’t want to do the pony tail any more, and having done the long hair thing, find more time for other things.

All of my friends have short hair. I have never seen anyone in the Salon where I go that didn’t have short hair.

Editor’s note: When I wrote that few women in New York dare to go short, I meant women under age 40. I added this to the post. Women tend to go shorter the older they get because it’s been pounded into our heads that older women should not grow their hair below their shoulders.

I’m 24 year-old American female, and have had short hair (sometimes very short) for the last 4 years solid, plus on and off my entire life. Short cuts are both suited to my face (oval) and work better with the texture of my hair (thin) than do longer cuts.

Two years ago I started cutting my hair myself. I am as satisfied, usually more satisfied, with the results than if I went to an expensive salon.

To the editor– I understood you meant the young, but seriously, I’m 19 and live on the Upper West Side. I was referring to youthful individuals as well. I know TONS of girls who go short. Myself included since I was 16 or so. My hair’s been as short as a pixie and has even had razored in parts before for fun. If you’re not seeing many young women go short, you’re not looking in the right places.

Ashley, I think it’s great that you and tons of your young friends & acquaintances are going short. I’ll have to venture up to the Upper West Side to see for myself because I’m just not seein’ it in the traditionally funkier parts of NY where I spend time. This is a shame, since I think short, funky cuts make life on the streets of downtown, uptown & in between much more interesting.

In my part of the Upper Midwest, almost no one under 40 has hair above their shoulders. And most in there 40s and 50s still have hair around shoulder lenght. I am so sick of ponytails I could puke. Ladies please mix it up once in a while, get a fresh short cut, it grows back!
