Bumble and Bumble Too Expensive? Other Cheaper Options

Saturday July 14, 2007
My recent posts on Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo worried some users because of the pricetag ($40 for the spray can). Keep in mind that for $20 you can get half the size at most salons. That said, there are cheaper dry shampoos available. A reader named Melissa wrote in swearing by a dry shampoo made by Algemarin.

Wow, I was just looking at Bumble and Bumble hair powder before returning to my RSS feed list and seeing this as the newest post – almost freaky. Yes, I see that it is very expensive. I’m very disappointed in the price. Right now, I use plain ol’ corn starch. To be honest, it works really great except that I do have to be careful to blow or brush it all out because my hair is dark brown right now (it’s not so much an issue with light hair).

You can also try Hair Fix- it comes in different colors, is organic, vegan and the packaging is recyclable. It also contains essential oils instead of perfumes (plus free shipping- can’t beat that!)

I have medium brown hair and I have been reading about using cornstarch as a dry shampoo. I decided to try it this morning and it was awful. I used two brushes to try to brush it out and you could still see it on my scalp and in my hair. Thank goodness I had time to wash my hair before going to work. My advice is to use talcum powder; I have used this and it works wonders.

Back in the 70’s they had a dry shampoo called PSSSSST dry shampoo. It was very popular. You can buy it at http://www.vermontcountrystore.com. for 11.95

My hair is also dark brown and I’ve been using the corn starch. It really works! It also gives the limp oily hair a lot of body. I apply it with a small makeup brush used for blush. I dip the brush into a small container of corn starch, tap off the excess, raise the hair in sections, and apply to the roots. After I’ve applied it all over then I run my fingers through the hair to shake off the excess. If you do it correctly you’ll be left with full hair free from oils. Every week I use a clarifying shampoo to be sure I’m getting it all out, especially the scalp. I don’t know if it’s really necessary but I do it anyway.

Back when Pssst first came out, my mother’s friends were sniggering about it being a fancy waste of money, as they used cornmeal between shampoos, and gave their hair 100 strokes of the brush.

Talcum powder is great for removing grease from paper, but be careful not to breathe it in; it’s use is purported to be one of the leading causes of asthma in American women.
