Transcript:How to Get Blake Lively's Long Waves

Hi, I'm Cati James, New York City film and fashion hair stylist and today I'm going to show you how to mimic Blake Lively's long wavy hairstyle.

This is one of the most popular hairstyles around right now. It's very flattering on most women, especially if you have a round or oval shaped face. Here's how to copy Blake Lively's wavy hairstyle.

Supplies Needed for Blake Lively's Long Waves

You'll need:
  • a lightweight serum for curly hair
  • 2 or 3 banana clips
  • a comb for sectioning
  • a curling iron, preferably a medium barrel -- this is a 1-1/4 inch, but you could go 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch
  • a lightweight, water based pomade
  • hairspray
  • a natural bristle hair brush

Prep Your Hair to Get Blake Lively's Long Waves

Start with clean, dry hair. Then take a lightweight serum for curly hair, and place a dime-sized amount into your palm, rub your hands together and then scrunch through the ends of the hair. Then taking a comb with a pointy edge, create a side part.

We're going to curl the hair in three different sections so there's more manageable pieces to work with and so that every wave is even. So working about the crown of the head, take the top portion of the hair, leaving a relatively thin layer on the bottom to work with. Then twist the hair on top of the head and secure with one or two banana clips.

Curl Hair to Get Blake Lively's Long Waves

Our curling iron has been heating up. So you're going to take your medium barrel curling iron, if you have very fine hair, you're going to want to put this on one of the lower settings. High settings for coarse, thick hair. And make sure every section you're curling is even.

Once you have your piece ready, make sure the clamp of the curling iron is facing away from you. Pull the piece through even, don't let any strands overlap with each other. And then make sure you get to the very end of the curling iron so you don't have any crimps in your curls. And then roll away from the face.

Let it heat for about 5-10 seconds depending on the coarseness of your hair. And then all in one piece, let the curl go. While this curl is still warm, you’re going to break it up a little with your fingers, so that it gets a little bit softer. Then take the next section and repeat.

So now we're going to work on the second section, we have our first section looking lovely, I'm just going to take this section and very gently put it over the shoulder. Start from the crown of the head, bring it back, and then we have another layer here.

Can Create Loose Curls for Blake Lively's Long Waves

For Blake Lively's style you can be a little more lax about it -- it doesn't have to be perfectly by the book because we're going to be scrunching these together at the end anyways. Everything is going to blend into each other. You kind of want that messy, beachy look, so don't stress if you don't have perfect, perfect curls right now.

And then for our soft waves, we're just going to soften these up a little bit. You can pull lightly, very gently, we don't want it to go straight. And then we've finished a section, so we spray it. Again we're going from the bottom to keep that nice volume we worked so hard to get in. Maybe 2, 3, 4 sprays. That's all you need.

So we're at our final layer, and this is the top of the hair, including the tendrils in front of the face. So we have all our sections curled now. I'm just going to spray that last part. Ok so now we have every section curled, we have some nice waves here, but we’re going for Blake's look which is very messy, very undone, very beachy, but still very chic and beautiful.

Brush Out Curls Slightly for Blake Lively's Long Waves

So now we're going to take our natural bristle brush -- so gently, not so we're pulling to straighten the wave, but we just want to make it a little looser, pulling downward. Take your water-based pomade, a dime-sized amount should do it. Rub it through your hands and start scrunching. This is the fun part. Give it a couple of sprays, and you're done.
