Q. Do Sunscreens Really Work?
A.
When applied properly, yes they do work... to some extent. Unfortunately, sunscreens are very seldom used in the way that they were intended. The amount of melanin in your skin needs to be taken into account. For example, I have darker skin than my British husband. While I seldom burn... and yes I do use sunscreen on a daily basis, he burns very easily. He needs to top up his application on a regular basis, just to prevent burning, while I top up just as often, to prevent my skin from aging any more than is necessary.
It is also important to actually use the sunscreen. And that means every inch of you that is exposed. There is no point spending hours in the sun with only your face protected. Ears, lips, scalp, hands and feet are often forgotten. While very few men will want to apply a sunscreen to their scalps, a hat is a very good substitute.
And then there those times when you sweat or are in the pool. Your sunscreen could be literally washed away. If you don't re-apply, your sunscreen isn't going to work... because there is no sunscreen on your skin to protect you.
