Q. What You Should Look for in a Sunscreen

A.

With so many bottles fighting for shelf space each summer, how do you know which sunscreen to choose. These guidelines below should help.
  • Always look for a sunscreen with the highest protection factor that you can find. Each year the SPF factors creep up, so be sure to take a good look at what is on the store shelves. And why is this important? A higher SPF factor does not necessarily ensure that you can stay out in the sun longer, it simply means that you have a little more protection if you have not applied an adequate amount. Unfortunately, very few people use the recommended amount. Always try to remember a teaspoon for your face and a tablespoon for each arm or leg.

  • It's also important to read the tube. It should clearly state that the formulation offers protection against the burning (UVB) rays and the aging (UVA) rays.

  • You should also look for an expiration date and after opening the tube, try to use it up within the year. I have heard conflicting stories on how long a sunscreen will last, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

  • It is a good idea to look for a waterproof sunscreen. Unfortunately, most people forget to re-apply when they leave the pool until it's too late. This can also be the case with sweating on an extremely hot day.

  • Ski holidays are different still. Look for sunscreens that state that they are for higher altitudes.

While all of these tips are important, I can't stress enough the importance of using an adequate amount. Be sure to read the article listed below... How to Apply Sunscreen.
