If your old nail polish has left your nails stained and discolored, have no fear, there are several ways to get remove stains from nails. Here are a few tried-and-true methods from nail experts:
- Get rid of yellow stains by mixing a tablespoon of Clorox in a cup of water, then scrubbing nails with an old toothbrush. -- NYC podiatrist Suzanne Levine in InStyle Magazine.
- Allure Magazine suggests rubbing a drop of lemon juice or lavender oil on nails and buffing out the stain.
- InStyle also recommends brushing away yellow stains on nails with a peroxide toothpaste. I suggest using an old toothbrush for this method as well.
- L.A. nail expert Ramona Givens suggests halving a lemon and squeezing out some of the juice, then placing fingers in the lemon and moving them around a bit. Let the lemon juice soak on nails for a couple minutes, then scrub nails with a baby toothbrush.
- Allure's book, "Confessions of a Beauty Editor," recommends soaking nails in a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide for 10 minutes.
- In Marie Claire's "Hair & Makeup" book, the editors suggest dropping 2 denture-cleaning tablets into a glass that's a quarter full of water. Soak nails in the solution and scrub them clean with a nail brush.
