French Pedis: Passé? You Won't Believe Who's Wearing This Outdated Trend

French pedicures have not been trendy in years, but recently, some celebrities have been spotted on the red carpet wearing them.

Celebrities including Ashley Tisdale, Katy Perry, Mindy Kaling, Sharon Stone and Lupita Nyong'o have all stepped out recently in the tale-tell white or pink toe with a lighter line across the top.

So is this a trend that may re-emerge? Not likely, according to Glamour and Allure, both of which have dubbed the French pedicure "tacky," while admitting there are still some women out there who insist the nail art is classic and refined, especially for events like weddings.

“I think French pedicures should never happen and should never have happened and should never happen again. And I love a natural looking toe, but definitely to make your toe look like it needs to be cut is not a look that I think is attractive at all," said celebrity Jenna Hipp in CY Interview.

When I wrote about this trend back in 2006, more than 400 comments rolled in both pro and con. Those against the French pedi loathed them because they make the toes look like they are several weeks overdue for a clipping. Others said they make toes look like fingers. Those in favor of the trend claimed they make the nails look neat, clean and sophisticated.

The secret to a tacky French pedi is a white stripe so bright you can see it a block away. For a more refined French pedi, keep both the nail color and the stripe light and subtle.

You don't see as many women on the streets of New York wearing this look and they aren't popular on the red carpet either. I couldn't find anything about French pedicures on today's hottest beauty Websites and blogs. I had to search long and hard for these images.

In this gallery, I feature the best and the worst celebrity French pedicures. Some of them look classic and refined, while others -- well, you can judge for yourself.

Actress Ashley Tisdale has a Pinterest page devoted to nail art called, Nailed It. And it's a popular page with only 202 posts but a whopping 37,000 followers.

Hello!

So it's no surprise to me that she likes French pedicures. She's been sporting French pedis for years.

Joanne Froggatt is known for her role as housemaid Anna Bates on the British TV series Downton Abbey.

She's been wearing French pedicures for months now. Check out these back in January, 2015. It looks like she applied White-Out to her bare toes.

But this pedicure? Not digging it. You?

Katy Perry is obviously a fan of painted toes. She's posted pictures on her Instagram of her toes painted like footballs for the Super Bowl and with the evil eye on a summer trip to Greece. Here she is in a French pedicure that's quite subtle and lovely. It helps that she has nice feet.

Not a fan of the French pedicure on toenails that curl under. Why highlight them?

The nails match the dress. At least the ends of the nails do. Thankfully she's wearing peeptoes so we don't have to see all 10 French pedicured toes on display.

Lupita is a beautiful woman, but I see her feet here and I just want to take toenail clippers to that big toe.

These stripes are bright, but they aren't offensive maybe because Robin's toes are so lovely. And the shoes are fantastic on her.
