There are lots of reasons why you shouldn't eat, but one of the most interesting has to do with a good nights sleep. Apparently, your body can't settle down when it is trying to digest food. If you like your evening snack, consider a glass of hot milk which will actually help you drop off or a pot of herbal tea that you can sip until bedtime.
