Glossary of Beauty Terms
Dateline: 09/04/98
I was asked a few weeks ago for an article on definitions, so I shall devote a feature to it every so often. I will select a number of terms along with their definitions so that you will no exactly what they mean!
ABS Plastic... this is the substance that most artificial nails are made of!
Acid Perms...a milder kind of perm that has a ph ranging from 6.5 to 8.0. With this kind of perm, you receive a softer more natural looking curl.
Alkaline Perm... this sort has a ph level that is higher... 7.5-9.5 resulting in a stronger, crisper curl.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid... formulated to lift dead skin cells from the skin when the process itself has slowed down due to our own aging.
Anti Aging...a label that promises lots but unfortunately has little merit ladies. The most that we can do is slow down the process as best we can. We can't erase wrinkles, no matter how hard we try.
Antihydrotic... a substance that you will probably find in your antiperspirant. It simply reduces the amount of sweat that is secreted from the sweat glands.
Comedone... means the same as blackheads.
Cellulite... that strange looking lumpy skin that some women find on their thighs. They are thought to be fat cells that contain a higher concentration of toxins than ordinary fat cells.
Exfoliation... the deliberate removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin... women are now exfoliating from the face down to the toes.

Question of The Week
Should we be concerned about bacteria in our bath sponges? And if so, what do we do?
Anna
Yes, there is reason for concern. A bathroom is a great place for germs to breed so here is what you do. Once a week, soak the sponges and loofahs in a solution for 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. This should sterize them nicely and then allow to air dry. When the sponges start to look worn, say in a couple of months or so, simply toss them and replace with new ones. sb :)
