The Fountain of Youth... At Last

From the time we were old enough to know about Vitamin C, we were told how good it was for us. It was supposed to keep us heathy and prevent us from catching colds. We probably believed this because of our history lesson concerning English sailors and their consumption of limes each day to ward off scurvy. Apparently in 1747, Dr. James Lind, a British physician, learned of this when he divided 12 sailors with scruvy into six pairs. The sailors receiving the citrus fruit were cured in a relatively short amount of time. The others unfortunately weren't so lucky. I'm not sure why, but another 50 years would have to pass before the navy would make use of the information. And it seems that we are still slow on the uptake of just what Vitamin C can do for us.

Apparently curing scurvy is only one of the benefits of this vitamin. You are seeing more and more beauty products including Vitamin C in it's formulation and I have even heard of individuals pulverizing Vitamin C tablets and adding the powder to their own creams, not to mention the serums that are popping up all over the country promising amazing results. And now, thanks to some lab rats, Vitamin C is beginning to be an effective treatment for a stressful day. If you have such a day ahead of you... simply pour yourself an extra glass of orange juice before you go. In the lab rats, rodents receiving large doses of Vitamin C reduced, if not elimated the secretion of stress hormones. Sounds almost too good to be true doesn't it.... but when you think about it, what have you got to lose? Could this be as close as we are going to get to "the fountain of youth?" Not only can you apply it to the skin, you take a gulp as well.
