Foundations...Are You Happy With Yours?

Dateline: 08/28/98

From the time I was a teenager, I was using a foundation but could never find one that I liked for a variety of reasons. It never covered well enough, it made my skin feel too oily...there was always one thing or another. This week, I thought I would go out and do a little survey..here is what the typical woman had to say about foundations, what she likes about them ...if she uses them at all!

Here's What They Had To Say!

Actually, I don't use foundations. I don't like the feel of them on my skin. I start with a clean face and use a moisturizer, which I apply with my fingers. After the moisturizer "sets", I use a light face powder (with the "powder puff" that comes with it...I can buy identical replacements) which tones down the darker or red areas on my skin. Then I brush on a rouge or blush. My eyes have light circles around them, so I lightly fill that in with a thin brushing of rouge; after that I highlight my cheeks, chin, and forehead. Mascara seems to give me headaches, so I just lightly outline my eyes and fill in my eyebrows....finish with a dab of lipstick and I'm ready to go.

Hi there Shirley. I've used Covergirl Clarifying Makeup for the past 4 years because it also has acne-fighting medicine in it and I do still get a few flare-ups of pimples now and again. However, I just switched to Avon's Clear Finish Make-up which has the exact same properties as the Covergirl. I must say though that the Covergirl provides longer-lasting coverage than the Avon. So, as soon as I'm out of the Avon foundation, I'm back to Covergirl.
Hope this helps.

I've used Mary Kay for years! The liquid. I love the little pump they gave me to get the stuff out of the bottle! I use a dry makeup sponge, and it goes on nice and light! I never feel the makeup on. I hate that icky caked on feel you get from a lot of foundations. If I need more coverage, I let it sink in my skin little, then go over the bad parts again, and still no 'dirty face' feeling, and I've never had it come off on my clothes!

Hi Shirley,
I also use no foundation and never have. I like to apply my alpha-hydroxy moisturizer and that's it.

I don't use foundation very often, usually only on fancy dress-ups. I like Amway's foundation, Artistry liquid, and also Revlon Age Defying makeup spf 8. They go on & blend well and come in real-people colors. To make it last well for me, set with powder. I usually just use a concealer where necessary and powder over that. It seems that just when I find a foundation I like, they stop making it! Of course, if I used it more often, that would be different! I love makeup and have since I was a young child. I was always putting on my mother's lipstick and chasing my sisters around to let me "make them up"!

For cool weather and dress-up I use Revlons Colorstay. After moisturizing I apply it with a damp sponge. It gives great even coverage that last all day and will not rub off onto your clothes or when you are giving out kisses.

During hot weather I prefer MaxFactor Silk Perfection liquid to powder. It applies lite coverage that is creamy and smooth and the way it is packaged, in a compact with mirror and sponge makes for easy and quick touch ups.

I usually don't wear foundation, but when I do, I like Almay's hypoallergenic foundation. I have very sensstive skin, and it bothers me less than many others do.

Living in a warm weather climate (read MAKE UP MELT DOWN), the choice of coverage is very important. You want something to stay, but not clog the pores or look like a mask.

For daily wear, I maintain a light tan on my face (very light to prevent future wrinkles) and follow up with a every other day application of a good self tanner. I like Neutragena, Ban de Soil or Clinique. Lip pencil, clear gloss, a hint of eye shadow and a flake proof brown black mascara gets me out the door.

For special occasions, I use Revlon color stay foundation to even out tone or provide a matte finish for evening. Also, a fun night time look is a body lotion with a touch of sparkle. It's so very pretty in soft light against a good tan!

Revlon color stay has become my new favorite for stick tight color that does not look like acrylic paint. The lipstick, blushes and eye shadows can add.

For makeup...well...I use Clinique for the hypo-allergenic value, and I find that it gives great coverage. I also love using MaxFactor....great stuff and not as expensive as Clinique. Hope this helps..

Question of The Week

I have problems with ingrown toenails that are extremely painfull. Can you help? Barbara

It could be as simple as how you cut the nail. Don't go for extremely short and be sure that they are not trimmed into a curve. They have to be straight.
However, some toenails simply have to be removed. If the above tips aren't working for you, visit your doctor. Having the nail removed is a simple procedure now and the pain will be gone forever! sb :)
