Summer Countdown
What You Need To Know

Summer isn't that far off and perhaps it is time to start looking for last year's bathing suit. Do you think it will still fit? If you are worried that it might not, here are a few very easy ways to take care of that problem starting today.

  • The next time you are craving a piece of chocolate or anything else that is sweet, try rinsing your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in warm water. Apparently rinsing your mouth with this solution will take away the craving.

  • When you are making a sandwich, hold off on the mayo and reach for the mustard instead. You will be saving a ton of calories as the main ingredient in mayo is oil. Mustard is simply water, vinegar and spices. Just think of how many calories you will be saving over a year if you choose mustard instead. And just think of that waistline!

  • Eating because you are bored is very common. I think we all do that from time to time, so here are a few tricks to help us get over this problem. Before you go for the snack foods that taste good, try a glass of ice water, some carrot sticks, or a piece of fruit. If they don't appeal to you at all, you know that you weren't hungry in the first place.

  • Did you know that you can shrink your stomach as much as 33% by eating 5 or 6 small meals a day instead of three large ones? If the stomach is smaller, you feel full faster.

  • I love desserts, but I have found a way to satisfy my craving while not blowing my diet. When I am at home, I keep low calorie desserts in the freezer just for me. When the family is eating something laden with calories, I get to enjoy dessert too. I have another trick for when we are out at a restaurant. I let my husband order dessert and then I have two bites of his. That is usually all it takes to satisfy my sweet tooth and as the plate is on the other side of the table, I am not tempted to take more. It works and it is easy!

  • Here is a good exercise for the torso area. With feet flat on the floor, breath deeply and stretch your hands over your head, hold for a few seconds and then slowly bring your hands back to a resting position. A couple of repetitions and the kinks are gone.

  • It has already been established that exercise is good for just about every part of you, but sometimes doing the same routine is just plain boring. So, don't do it. Pull the curtains, put on your favorite music and start moving. Put everything you've got into it and you'll have given yourself a good work-out.

  • Get into the habit of starting your meals with a bow of soup. Recent tests showed that you will consume about 1/3 less calories by starting the meal with soup. The reason for this is that it takes you longer to consume and you will feel satiated sooner. Obviously, the calorie count of the soup must be taken into account as well.
