Question: "I am in my early 50s (female) and I am developing varicose veins in my right lower leg. It started to cause much discomfort and I started wearing support hose. Is there anything I can do in the way of exercise or something other than drugs? Will working at the computer make this condition any worse? Thank you."
Answer: "Varicose veins means that the veins have lost their elasticity or they are being enlarged in one area because of blockage to another.
Treatment techniques have really advanced today--laser, diagnosis, etc. Please check with your doctor regarding treatment options. Unfortunately, exercise brings more circulation to the legs, making the veins stretch more. However, raising your legs up in the air does help drain the veins. Blood clots can occur with varicositis so proper teatment is medically as well as cosmetically indicated. Sitting or standing in one place for a period of time can slow the circulation in the veins which is undesireable. I recommend getting up frequently either at computer or on a lengthy plane trip."
