Fragrance in the 1900's
The number of companies producing fragrances has grown substantially in this decade, now bringing in between 2.2 million and 7 million dollars.
- Francois Coty had an interesting way of making sure that his new fragrance was noticed. In 1905, he took his new fragrance La Rose Jacqueminot to Paris, but was refused permission to show off it off. But that wasn't about to stop him. On his way out of the department store, he accidently (on purpose) dropped the bottle, which shattered, releasing the scent to everyone. He went on to found one of the most influential cosmetic companies in history.
- By 1910 Coty had made a name for himself in Paris and could boast royalty as customers. He was also a good business man. He was one of the first to offer free samples, not to mention small bottles that were affordable by the working class.
- Guerlain also released a new scent during this decade. It was called Apres L'Ondee, meaning "after the shower". It fragrance was supposed to remind you of a cold wet morning full of the scents of Hawthorne and violets. Apparently this is referred to as a cold scent and is rather rare. To find this scent today would be a find indeed. Guerlain does not promote it, and it is not easily found.
