Diamonds have a great number of superstitions attached to them, but apparently even Cleopatra was superstitious about this particular stone. She kept a rather large one on her person to attract and hold the love of Mark Antony.

During the middle ages however, this practice was used in a different way. It was thought that the use of diamonds around the face, would ward off the evil eye.
