November Beauty Trends

Latest beauty trends from around the world

Laura Sherwood, our Northern US Correspondent

The makeup trends in our area tend to be very natural. Berries, Wines, and Browns seem to dominate in lipstick. Natural toned shades in brown, plums, grays for the eyes. Blusher is natural mainly to draw attention to either stronger lips or eyes. Fresh, clean fragrances are popular, nothing to overpowering. I also contacted Jeffrey Gavin Lyle, co-founder of David Gavin Salons, and here's what he had to say...

Hair for fall/winter 2000 is exciting and free - longer, full shaggy looks accented by soft perms and body waves. Color is softer - hilites less bold. We step away from geometric shapes to more carefree, less structured styles. We will see shoulder length hair more the norm for women of all ages. Men's hair will follow suit, longer less structure.

The trend is the same as we saw in the early 60's when Nancy Sinatra was popular. Remember "These boots are made for walking"? Well her hair back then was shorter, but "billowy" on top in the crown. From what the hairdressers tell me, that's the style they are cutting and styling. Another popular style we are seeing is  hair mainly left long and one length except for the bangs and sides which are cut more in a shag ... seems like that came about in the later 60's, if memory serves me correctly. Also, the makeup is heavier as it was then too-- dark blue, green, and even gold eye shadows, lots of eyeliner (mostly black) and heavy mascaras, bold and bright lipsticks, flowers (whether tattooed, stickers, or paints) on the side of one temple, flower stick-ons for fingernails and long nails again.

First off, good old Marks and Spencer, not content with having introduced a completely new sizing policy and trendy mail-order clothing catalogue (which I'm hooked on!), have also had a complete image re-vamp on their cosmetics line. The Perfect cosmetics collection has been designed with make up artist maestro John Gustafson, comes in smart silver pebble shaped compacts.

Elle magazine held its famous annual Style Awards. This year's style queen - none other than Victoria Beckham who won the 'Most Stylish Look' award - as if she needed telling!

Eyes are going smouldery and lashes are getting longer and sexier: YSL have just launched their super lash lengthening mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils. Infact it's full on glam time - hoorah! The season sees big hair make a comeback, with smouldering eyes, strong (preferably red) lips: some style mags (Marie Claire) say it's back to the 80s with a bang: think Studio 54 but with a bit more panache! Elle interprets the look as not so much the 80s (let's face it, the tackiness of that era is enough to make even the most ardent style queen shudder!) but polished punk: 'punk chic'. Lots of liquid liner, dark vampy lips: 'a veritable mutiny against all things nude and natural'.  Whichever look you prefer, make up is back - as Elle says, the look is 'rich, rebellious and seriously sexy'.

Base is set for a shake up, too. One minute it was matte skin, this Summer it was dewy. This season sees perfect skin somewhere in between the two: real, healthy and glowing. A whole line of skin perfecting cosmetics are ready to tempt us (it all began last year with Prescriptives' Magic line and Lauder's Spotlight skin illuminator): Ultima II, Shiseido and, new to our shores from Japan SKII. Chanel's new Universal foundation promises to wear like a second skin as well as making our faces look fabulous.

Nails have taken a new twist - something that was rather slow to take off but which seems to be catching on is the inverted French manicure - pale nails with dark tips , or the more glamorous deep red with gold tips.
