What Ever Do I Wear???

It never fails, Halloween arrives and you don't have a clue what to wear. I thought that I would ask a few friends what they have used in the past for easy costumes and here is what they had to say.

I bought some inexpensive brown fabric that was perfect for Indian costumes with fringe ... the pattern was for both male/female, and on sale. Decorative zigzag stitching in bright colors was quick, simple, and a nice touch. Long-hair black wigs from WalMart and a few bright feathers to stick in them, some dark makeup, a black pencil liner, and pumpkin color lipstick rounded it all out.

This year I'm looking at the glitter makeup and nail polish in greens and purples to go with the witchy dress I picked up for $5 at a store's New Year's clearance sale. I can use the black wig again. ~ Jo

Easy Gypsy

You will need a full colorful skirt (longer length), a peasant blouse, some folksy dangle earrings (i.e. coins) or gold hoops, and a triangular/oblong colorful scarf for head and/or waist.

Easy Middle East Dancer

For this costume, look for a solid color/or folksy design caftan, a glittery head scarf, some metallic earrings that dangle, a necklace (coin necklace would be great), a large scarf for the hip sash/belt.

Another variation... harem pants, a solid t-shirt with a golden collar painted-on, a scarf for hips, dangle coins and earrings. I used a ponytail elastic in the front to secure t-shirt into a crop-top. Then simply tuck knot under and you are set.

I used this outfit for an actual dance costume - red striped harem pants, a purple scarf skirt (4 scarves), and a black t-shirt (short sleeved) with a gold collar design. Gold coin earrings and coin belt finished the costume. ~ Natima

Dorothy, of the Wizard of Oz

And one evening on our chat, Leeta told me of several costumes that she has worn over the years. Here is one for Dorothy, of the Wizard of Oz... taken straight from the chat...~ Dorothy

  • Take an old pair of shoes, preferably pumps.
  • Go to your local craft store and buy the red glitter spray paint.
  • Paint the shoes.
  • If you have a pinafore, great otherwise take a blue skirt, preferably light blue.
  • Go to the fabric store and buy about a yard of blue to match and create a make-shift pinafore.
  • Get a three-in-one basket with the little sections and into it pop [a little stuffed dog--I said Toto shrank in the wash.
  • Get some yarn or use a wig for the pigtails tied with blue ribbon.
  • Come to think of it, I think I won a prize for that one too
  • The shoes make the costume. ~ Leeta

Angel (also by Leeta)

You can make wings or buy them. Make a quick white habit. You don't need a pattern, just trace and sew. I used wire for the double halo. The bottom part goes around the head. The top is elevated with the wire and wrapped with gold tinsel. Use gold makeup to augment your own makeup. And don't forget the glitter hair spray too. That's a nice touch. ~ Leeta

Countess Dracula

One year, I pulled my hair back and penciled in a widow's peak and then darkened my eyebrows and eyes as well. I purchased the lightest foundation that I could find and then added baby powder to it to make it even whiter. For my lips, I applied blood red lipstick with a little smear trickling out of the side of my mouth. That took care of my makeup.

For my clothes, I went to a Sally Anne and picked out the flashiest gown I could find. It just happened to be red and looked great with a cape that I managed to borrow. A feather boa might have been an interesting touch as well. ~ Pamela

One of my best costumes was designed by my sister out of sheer exasperation. Needless to say, I forgot to tell her that I needed a costume for a party and this was the best she could do. She decided, that if I wore everyday clothes but made myself look a bit bizarre, it might just work and surprisingly enough it did. She found an old suit in the attic that must have come from the 50's and although it was a little tight, she said it made it look all the stranger. Next came her makeup which she applied in a way that made me look washed out and hungry, LOL. I didn't realize how good a costume it was until I started noticing the reaction of the people at the party. They weren't sure if I was for real or someone who had just walked in off the street. It was great! ~ David
