How To Create a Soft Shag

From About.com

You have always loved "The Shag", but when you have attempted to re-create it at home... it simply doesn't look the way you thought it would. Here some instructions. Remember, practise makes perfect.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: n/a

Here's How:

1.   Wash hair with a shampoo that is suitable for your hair. Rinse well. We seldom spend long enough on this step. Imagine how sticky shampoo left in your hair is going to ruin your style.

2.   Either use a rinse out conditioner, or save time with one that stays in your hair. Personally, I prefer leave in conditioners. Just one less step.

3.   Allow hair to air dry to the damp stage. I only use a blow-dryer if I'm in a rush.

4.   Add a volumizing product if your hair is fine.

5.   Using a curling brush with a large barrel, begin lifting sections on the crown. The air flow should finish drying the hair and add height at the same time.

6.   As you can see in the photo, Holly has gentle curls at the cheekbone and chin area. You should be able to create them by either continuing with the curling brush, or remove the brush attachment and use the curling iron attachment instead. The amount of curl your hair has, should give some indication of the time needed to coax in the necessary curl to this style.

7.   When the style is complete, keep it all in place with some styling spray. Hold the spray above your head, spritz the air and then wave your hands so that a fine mist settles onto your style.
