Your Sock Drawer
Time to clean it out!
You probably have heard this a million times, but if your socks have holes in them... throw them out. One tiny hole can get big, very quickly. And frankly, it isn't a pretty picture. So what caused the hole in the first place? A few things come to mind and they are not all your fault. So here's a quick list.-
*Make sure that the socks you buy have some synthetic material at the toe and heel. This will make them last longer.
*Make sure that your socks fit. If they are too big, they will rub and that can cause holes to start. And look for socks that have a shaped foot. They will make them last longer too. And don't hand them to your Mom to darn... if anyone still does that. Not only will the spot be uncomfortable, it will wear out quickly, resulting in another hole.
*There are so many kinds of socks on the market. There are socks for hikers, socks for walkers, dress socks, casual socks, gym socks to name a few. Be sure to wear the right sock for the right occasion. You can imagine how a pair of dress socks will stand up in hiking boots... holes in no time!
*Wash your socks regularly. Sand and dirt embedded in the toes, can rub against the fibres and yes, more tiny holes are the result.
How you wash socks is also important. Before you toss them into the laundry, turn them inside out so that everything washes out. Not only is sweat in the fibres, you will also find dead skin flakes... and you don't want them accumulating wash after wash.
Look for seams that are smooth. You won't believe how many pairs of socks I have seen that are raised seams. Just asking for trouble.
As for sock fibres... many prefer wool for their absorbency, but be sure to look for a combination of wool and synthetic fibres. The wool should be just a small percentage of the combination. Too much and your feet will sweat and feel clammy. What your socks are made of however, is totally up to you. You may prefer acrylic socks. Many claim that they are the dryest sock of all. Research tells me that 100% cotton socks are the worst! On the other hand, you might love them. It's all up to you!
