The Charm of Dieting

Be just a little wicked...

I certainly watch my calories, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that I diet. Actually, I hate that word. Most diets don't work on a permanent basis anyway. So I decided to give it a little thought to see where diets go wrong.

To begin with, I think that depriving yourself is the worst thing you can do. Just how long is that going to last if you really love... potato chips for example. Are you going to permanently strike them off your list of foods that you can work into your diet? Seems to me that would be the quickest way to ruin a good thing. There has to be a better way and here is what I have come up with... and it is relatively painless.

Set goals... nothing sweet today.
It's easier than I ever imagined. Just knowing that you can have something sweet tomorrow gives you the strength to ignore that chocolate that is calling your name today.

Create a list of snack foods you have never tried.
I could list hundreds, but I'm leaving that task up to you. Start off with veggies that you like and then jump to fruits. After that there are all the low calorie junk food just to keep it interesting. Actually, that's it in a nutshell. Don't allow yourself to eat the same foods week after week. You will get bored and your good intentions will be out of the window.

Work Your Way To Skim
I started out when I was a kid drinking whole milk. I couldn't even imagine trying to drink skim, but that is exactly what I did by moving in stages. I moved to 2% and then to 1% and finally to skim and it didn't hurt a bit. Now, I can't imagine drinking whole milk. Just think of the calories saved!

Take your own snacks to work or school
If you haven't anything with you, the coffee truck or cafeteria is really hard to resist.

Some quick tips if you are watching your calorie count...

* Keep raw veggies on the counter.

* Slow down your eating.

* Treat yourself every once in a while.

* Share your dessert with someone else. My husband has come to expect that I'm going to eat almost half of whatever he orders at a restaurant, and as it is a treat... I don't feel guilty at all!
