How To : Ask Jamie (December 02)
Topics this month include salons advertising for models, drying curly bangs, burning the scalp with the hair dryer, dressing up very short hair for the holidays, changing your hair from brown to white and more.Difficulty: N/A
Time Required: N/A
Here's How:
1. What is with salons advertising for models? Sherri from England) This usually means that the salon has a junior stylist that needs the practise. (See tip one)
2. Question about drying curly bangs came in from Sonia from Toronto. The best way to straighten bangs is to use a paddle brush to smooth, or a round brush to give them a little curve.
3. Question about burning the scalp with the hair dryer came in from Brenda, Los Vegas. Sounds like the hair dryer is too close to the scalp and is staying in one place too long. (Continued in tip 2)
4. Question regarding fancying up really short hair for the holidays (from Allison from New York). With all the great barettes and jeweled pins that are available, you can get a lot of mileage! (See tip 3)
5. Question about straightening your hair everyday without harming it. (Melissa) Unfortunately, you can't. I would suggest a style that would work with the natural curl that you have. (See tip 5)
6. Question from Cameron about going from short straight hair to an Afro. The only way I can see that happening is if you grow out your hair and get it permed.
7. Question from Katie, who wants to know how to do an updo for a winter formal. If you want to manage it yourself, try some of Shirley's How-To's. They are great for the beginner.
8. Question From Mandi, who wants to know if she can wear rhinestones in her hair if they are in her dress and shoes. I would say that it would pull the look together nicely. Just a scattering though. We don't want to blind everyone.
9. Question from Joanie about dandruff and what to do about it. Your scalp as you suggested, could be extremely dry. (See tip 4)
10. Question from Matt who has curly hair but wants straight. Have it professionally straightened. This is probably the easiest way unless you want to straighten it yourself after washing.
11. Continued for Matt: This is cheaper if you have the time. There are also a lot of straightening serums on the market that can help.
12. Charity has thick bangs but wants to create modern wispy bangs. Let some of them grow out, (pin them back)and to make them wispy, there is a special technique that can be done at a salon. It involves snipping little wedges out of the length.
13. Bethany is looking for a trendy style for the winter formal. Again, look at the How-to's available on this site. They walk you through the style, every step of the way.
14. Chris has brown hair but wants white blonde. You are going to have to go to a salon and have all of the color bleached out of it. This is one procedure that you can't do at home.
15. Continued for Chris: If it is done incorrectly, you will be left with some shade of red or orange
Tips:
- Continued from #1: They are closely monitored so take full advantage of these specials. They practise everything from cutting your hair to the latest colors.
- Continued from #3: Concentrate on the hair and not the scalp as you dry it, and keep the dryer moving at all times.
- Continued from #4: Glittery pins look great in short hair. Try three or four in a row!
- Continued from #9: Make sure that you are rinsing every trace of shampoo from your hair. This often is the culpret and most often missed. And that product you don't like the smell of. I hear this often. Try something else.
- Continued from #5: Why not lots of layers cut into your hair for movement. Check the bulk. You simply might have too much.
