1950's Beauty
- Cosmetics became a necessity to every woman during this decade and there was lots to choose from.
- Hazel Bishop invents the first indelible lipstick during the 1950's.
- Throwaway lipstick cases introduced.
- Ava Gardner endorces "Max Factor's Cream Puff Pressed Powder"
- Young women craving a little of the magic of Paris, saved their pennies to buy a bottle of Evening in Paris during this decade. It was re-released in 1990, rather unsuccessfully. For some reason, it did not seem to have the same scent that women remembered.
- Estee Lauder released Youth Dew to woman during the 50's. Because women did not buy fragrances for themselves, Lauder formulated the scent into bath oil and lotion.
- Eye makeup hit the market in a big way and they were a lot brighter than one would imagine. It was quite natural to see purple mascaras, blue and green shadows.
- Brigitte Bardot made quite the name for herself with her dark smouldering eyes and pale lips.
- Max Factor introduces Erace, the first cream concealer. Lipsticks and eye shadows were soon to follow. Titanium was later added to tone down the brightness of the shades, leading to softer shades.
During This Decade...
Housewives were expected to be glamorous... all the time. That probably contributed to the June Cleaver image of women in a pretty dress, heels and string of pearls.
The Year Was 1955
1955 Crest, the first toothpaste with fluoride clinically proven to fight cavities, was introduced.
