In China...
You don't have to ring the doorbell! Actually, it is illegal to do so...

I just learned today, that it's illegal in China to sell things door to door! That must have seemed odd to a company like Avon who has rung more doorbells in hopes of selling their product line. So instead, Avon took their products to the department stores and they are doing so well, that they have plans to open 500 new outlets a year. So well apparently, that a brand new line is in the works for 2005.

"Chin Deep in Bubbles" by Melissa Placzek

I was thumbing through my books today, and found this one. I have had it for some time now, but for some reason it called out to me. It must have known that it was exactly what I needed... and perhaps you do too. Today, I want you to take a little time for yourself. Turn the kids over to your significant other if necessary, and then close the door. Listen to music, read a novel, or just do a little daydreaming. That's what I did today!

This Shampoo or That One?
I received an email from a gentleman a few weeks ago and he wanted me to recommend a good shampoo... for men. Apparently, he thought that he shouldn't be using shampoos formulated for women. Just in case you have been thinking the same thing...

Why are there special formulations for men? It's mostly in the scents that are used. They are especially chosen to please the male. In men's shampoos, you are less likely to find a scent that smells like flowers or bubble gum.

Until just recently, I had the directions for this Halloween costume, but unfortunately, no photo. Today I am happy to say that we are all in luck. I received the perfect photo for this unusual costume idea ... and yes, he won first prize.

Halloween is Expensive!
If you have been visiting the malls lately, you know what I'm talking about. There are elaborate costumes, wigs, makeup and that's just for starters. Then there are all the items to decorate your home inside and out. This morning, I'm offering a little help. If you can save a little money now, you have more to spend at Christmas. Here's a little help in that direction.

I am always amazed at some of the costumes that people come up with. Here are some homemade varieties along with some that are being offered on the net. You can put in your order or use them for inspiration. :)

Wrinkles from Worrying?
We have all heard that stress is not good for you, but does it play a part in beauty? You bet it does. While we can go out and buy creams to help lessen the lines that we see on our faces as we age, it was stress that put a lot of them there!

This week, I am going to show you just how important it is to learn how to control the stress in your life. Not only will you feel a lot better, you will successfully be able to lie about your age.

What's In Your Purse?
Is your handbag getting just a little heavy? Could it be that it has been over a month since you last cleaned it out? Trust me, from experience, you will be amazed at what you find inside.

I have found everything from rocks to year old receipts. On the bright side, just yesterday, I found a five dollar bill! Take some time this weekend sorting out yours. If nothing else, it just might be a lot lighter and who knows what treasures it might hold.

**Have you signed up my newsletter? It is full of little reminders such as this. Here's to a life that is a lot less complicated, a lot more fun, and a lot lighter too.

Bubbling Bath Salts
And you thought that bath salts simply disappeared into nothing. These salts certainly don't... they smell great, look all sparkly and they bubble too.

2 cups of kosher salt
1 cup table salt
2 T cosmetic grade glitter
a few drops of sandalwood scented oil

1/4 cup of baby shampoo

Combine the top four ingredients and stir until the texture is smooth. Drizzle with the baby shampoo and then spread onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet until you have an even layer. Allow to dry. This could take up to 24 hours depending on the humidity.

Package in a decorative jar... mason jars will do fine and include instructions for use if these salts are to be used as a gift. (About 1/3 cup should do the average bath).

Forty Lashes
I have received so many emails about magazine lashes, that I thought that I would share a secret. Just how do the models get lashes that long and lush?

Believe it or not, makeup artists don't simply coat them for a few seconds like we do. A lot of time is devoted to those lashes... a LOT of time. Would you believe that an hour is not uncommon? But, we can make sure that we get something close by using the applicator correctly.

Use the tip to darken/lengthen those lashes in the corner of the eye. They are often missed entirely.

Be sure to apply mascara onto the base of the lashes. This can look rather odd when you have light colored lashes. The lashes start out blond and then suddenly turn black!

Try different techniques while applying your mascara. I find that by twirling your mascara wand as you apply, lengthens and separates at the same time. Pay special attention to the outer lashes as well. They can make so much difference. Try it and you will see what I mean!

Favorite Mascara to date: Urban Decay Sky Scraper

DID YOU KNOW
In 1914, a black wax was melted and applied to the lashes drop by drop!

Ask Jamie About Volume
Hi Jamie,
Is there a quick way I can add volume to my hair? It is so flat it's ugly.
Deb

Hi Deb,
There are tons of great products on the market. Start out with a volumizing shampoo. They work by coating every strand. And have you ever noticed how full your hair looks after walking on the beach? It's the salt water. Fill a mister full of water and add a tablespoon of salt. Shake it and then mist it on freshly washed hair. Style as usual.

Petroleum Jelly on your Face?
If you want to know a secret, here is one that Health Spas use and it has everything to do with moisturizing your face. Wash as you normally do and then rub in just a dab of petroleum jelly. The trick is to keep your face damp until the jelly has been evenly spread. It should not appear greasy. You will be amazed at how soft your face will feel. **I had only heard about this practise, so I decided to try it for myself. I wanted to see how it would spread and if it did feel greasy to the touch.

Amazingly enough, it didn't. I did use just a tiny little bit however. I can imagine that it would feel horribile if you used too much. At this time of year, the more moisture we can seal into our skin, the better.

Hangnail Nightmares
Is there anything more painful than hangnails? And is it something you are doing or not doing, that contributes to them? From experience, I think that the answer has to be yes. Here is what I have found to be a major cause and what I learned to do to prevent them.

Every year around this time, I used to find myself with hangnails... those tiny pieces of skin on your cuticles that catches on everything, and for something so tiny... really hurt. But, no more. I learned that dry air (that is so common as we turn on the heat in our homes), was to blame. Now, I keep a small bottle of hand lotion by my desk and every time I think about it, I moisturize my hands while paying special attention to my (parched) cuticles. At the moment, my hands are soft and hangnail free. If only I had known this 10 years ago. When I think of all those hangnails I suffered with... and all they needed was a little moisture!

Age Spots?
Question: My Mom has age spots on her upper chest. Does that mean that I am going to get them as well? Gillian
Answer: Not necessarily. Age spots occur from exposure to the sun and not enough, if any sunblock. Before you go outside (any time of the year), be sure to not only wear sunblock on your face, but spread it on your neck and keep on going. Where ever the sun can touch your skin, damage can occur.

Fear of Flying...
I have to admit, I'm not really keen on flying, but what really worries me is what flying is doing to my body. Here are a few things that I put into practice on my recent trip to England.

Don't wear makeup during the flight. Leave your face bare so that you can mist it often with a spray bottle of water. Not only is it cool and relaxing, it is good for your skin. I did pack a compact of blusher and a tube of lipstick however so that I could at least add a little color to my face before I stepped off the plane.

Be sure to drink lots of water throughout the flight. I know that it means more trips to the washroom, but trust me, your body will appreciate the attention. So why is it so important to drink more water? For one thing, the cabins are extremely dry. You need to have enough water in your body so that the mucus secretions in your sinuses stay thin and sinus passages remain unblocked. This could help prevent you from catching a cold from that person a few seats away.

You might also want to carry those little foil pouches of hand sanitizers. Out of sheer boredom, you are more likely to touch a multitude of surfaces that have come in contact with other people.

I seldom remove my seatbelt during a flight, but I do move as much as possible. It is amazing how much you can actually do without leaving your seat. You can stretch your arms over your head, do shoulder circles, stretch your torso from one side to the other, do ankle circles and then there are the mandatory trips to the washroom... that's exercise too.

Following all of these suggestions just might get you to your holiday destination in good health. Imagine spending all of that money on a trip and you aren't at your best.

Found: Woman With the Best Legs in America
Gillette Announces Passion Pink Venus "Legs of a Goddess" Contest Winner September 2003 (Newstream) -- The Gillette Company today announced the winner of the Passion Pink Venus "Legs of a Goddess" contest, ending a nationwide search to find the woman with the best legs in America. The search, which included competitions in 10 cities across the United States and online entries, was kicked-off by Paula Abdul in June 2003 to celebrate the new Passion Pink Venus razor for women.

Twenty-six year old Mara Degenhardt, a Miami Beach native, was one of almost one thousand women nationwide to "strike a pose" for the contest judges. Judges - including wellness guru and celebrity fitness trainer David Kirsch and local modeling representatives - looked for legs that were shapely, toned and that had a good overall appearance.

"The contest was a fun way to show women that they don't need to be supermodels to have great legs," said Nancy Teumer, Business Director for female shaving, The Gillette Company. "With regular exercise, proper diet and the right tools - including our new Passion Pink Venus razor - any woman can feel like a goddess."

When notified of her selection, Ms.Degenhardt said, "How am I supposed to study for an accounting test when I've just won the Passion Venus 'Legs of a Goddess' contest?" Nicknamed "Legs" by her family and friends, Ms. Degenhardt is a Florida International University graduate student by day and a bartender by night. In addition to winning the coveted title, Mara will ride away in a vintage, pink Cadillac convertible and have the chance to appear in a Venus commercial.

Gillette for Women Passion Venus is available to consumers in North America, Europe and select international markets in food, drug, convenience and mass merchandise stores. The shaving system, which includes the refillable razor, one additional cartridge and a storage compact, retails for approximately $7.99 to $8.99 [U.S.]. A package of four refill cartridges retails for approximately $7.99 to $8.99 [U.S.].

Headquartered in Boston, Mass., The Gillette Company is the world leader in male grooming, a category that includes blades, razors and shaving preparations. Gillette also holds the number one position worldwide in selected female grooming products, such as wet shaving products and hair epilation devices. In addition, the Company is the world leader in alkaline batteries, toothbrushes and oral care appliances
