Dry Skin? No More Hot Showers! But Do Sleep With a Humidifier

By December 5, 2013

Follow me on:

It's winter and if you're like me, you practically have to force yourself out of the shower every morning. I could practically live in mine. There's nothing like hot steam to warm me up in the mornings and right before bed.

But these hot showers always lead to dry, itchy skin for me. My skin can get so dry, I scratch my legs until they bleed. Furnaces and heat in buildings here in New York also don't help. They also sap my skin of its moisture. Winters can be hell on my skin. To keep skin moist, try these tips I swear by:

  1. Take lukewarm, shorter showers in the winter. If you can't tolerate lukewarm, at least keep the heat to the absolute minimum you can be comfortable with.
  2. Skip baths, hot tubs and steam rooms. (Sorry!)
  3. Exfoliate in the shower once a week. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and allows the moisturizer to soak in better.
  4. Slather yourself in baby oil, extra virgin coconut oil or a thick moisturizer immediately after your bath or shower.
  5. Sleep with a humidifier in your bedroom.

It is too cold for me to have a shower in mornings in this season! So I have a bath in every evening. I agree with you saying that hot water leads to itchy. My son has very sensitive skin so he has a bath with lukewarm water. There are some tips to keep the skin moist on the article and they are very useful to me. Thanks.

And shorter showers are better for the environment, too! :)

Shorter showers are better no matter what! :) But I can’t stand not having my hot water in the morning (cold water just doesn’t do it at 5 in the morning) so at the end of my shower I turn on the cold water and do a cold rinse! Save the environment though, and do take shorter showers!
