Canadians Warned About Brazilian Blowouts

Curly-haired girls beware! One of the most popular hair straightening brands in North America is under attack. The Brazilian Blowout , which has become more and more controversial even as it has become more popular, contains a solution that is 12 percent formaldehyde, according to Health Canada, the health department of the Canadian government.

The findings are so severe (formaldehyde is allowed in Canada but only at 0.2 percent), health officials there are warning stylists to stop doing Brazilian Blowouts.

So what is the Brazilian Blowout? It's marketed as a formaldehyde-free alternative to chemical relaxers that keeps hair straight for up to 12 weeks. However, no one actually knows what's in the solution because the company behind the product won't disclose the ingredients citing confidentiality as it awaits a patent. Even more mind-boggling? According to the New York Times, the FDA has no restrictions on the use of formaldehyde in cosmetics.

If you want to straighten your hair safely, you can always get a professional, non-chemical blow-out. Salons specializing in blowouts for curly-haired girls are popping up across the country and are insanely popular in LA. Check it out here.
