It's weird, but every once in awhile someone compliments me on my brows. Of course this leads me to wonder, "Why not my eyes? Don't you like my hair? Is 'brows' the BEST YOU CAN DO?" But I take the compliment graciously and tell them my secret to groomed brows: threading.
Every few weeks I wander into a little threading shop underground at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NY (yes, that's "30 Rock" to you) and I get my brows done for a mere $8 -- $10 with tip. They do a great job, it doesn't hurt too much (not like waxing) and I'm out of there in 5 minutes.
You can find threading shops in larger towns and cities. They seem to be on every other block in NY. I highly recommend you try one on your next visit to the big city. Here's how it works.

Hi Julie, I came accross the Brunette (top 15) on your blog..but I am pretty dissapointed and frankly annoyed that you started out giving advice on what color n best cut with Penelope Cruz’s picture..yet..the rest is just your “opinion” on the stars color n style. I am on a budget, and it would help out..with all the sponsors you get to write down “color ” suggestions..from Clairol! Thanks!
I have tried to thread my own brows. It was just about the most painful thing I have ever done.
I think shops that do this are not common outside of NYC. I live in a big city and travel to other cities for work and have never seen it outside NYC.
But if anyone is traveling thru NYC this article should be very usefulish.
Threading is the only thing i recommend for brows.Over here in Pakistan its extremely popular, costing about nothing. Of course it is perhaps the only method known. Waxing and plucking are done rarely. Threading CANNOT be done by your own self. You need to hold your brows taut while someone else threads. You can only thread your upper lips yourself. Takes about 2 minutes. Threading gives a very defined and precise shape.
Finding someone who does threading isn’t that tough, even outside of the really big cities, if you know how to look. I live near Edmonton, Alberta (a city in northern Canada) of about a million but have also lived in a city of about 30 000 that you can also get threading done at. It’s a matter of knowing HOW to look for someone who does it.
If there is a Indian or Southeast Asian owned hair salon you can start by asking there if anybody does threading and leaving your card so they can contact you, it is VERY likely that they will know somebody who does it either in salon or out of their home. This is probably the most common facial hair removal system in India. There it is not restricted to just eyebrows but also upper lip hair and even sides of the face and under the chin. It should cost somewhere between $7 and $15 and the results are usually more precise than waxing.
It only costs about $7-15 for Thermolysis which usually kills the hair the first time with none or very minimal discomfort. After a couple visits, you have no more plucking to do.
You are free for the rest of your life. I had it done in my mid-twenties. Now I am in my mid-fifties and I still don’t tweeze my brows.
It’s about TOTAL Freedom from hair, not a new way to rip it out.
this is great advice!
In Malaysia,we embroidered our eye brows and touch up every year to maintain the colour and shape. However you still need to trim and pluck the unwanted ones. It’s about USD100 for first timer and USD30 for every touch up.
I wouldn’t recommend threading for people who have sensitive skin. The first and only time I’ve tried threading I regretted very much. It was painful and I got a bunch of little scabs after 2 days
