Who is the Woman With the Real Curves in Glamour?

Saturday August 22, 2009

When I opened this month's Glamour magazine I could hardly believe my eyes. There on page 194, clad only in a teeny-weeny thong, was a woman whose body I recognized.

She looked like Every Woman. Gorgeous and curvy, she had a real belly that wasn't concave or airbrushed and I loved that she had an authentic smile, unlike so many fembot models in the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. I was thrilled and it turns out so were many readers, because Glamour's editor decided to explain just who the woman on page 194 is. She's a 20-year-old "plus-sized" model who just happens to be a size 12-14. Way to go Glamour!

Finally, a model who doesn’t make me feel like I’m inferior for not having every inch of my body sculpted. When I see this “plus sized” model, I feel like it’s okay not to be a size 0 with big pouty lips or a frozen face due to a botox overload.

Hopefully, the positive responses that Glamour has received for featuring this “every woman” will convince the industry that the so-called “plus” size models are actually “average” size and that today’s women want to see featured models they can relate to! I think she’s beautiful and I am proud of Glamour! Now let’s see them continue this trend and feature more average size modles with real curves who the rest of us can relate to!

She is lovely and it is so wonderful to see a real woman in a fashion magazine. But I must say one thing… does anyone else out there have a problem with the term “plus sized”? Even women who wear a size 8 are considered plus by fashion industry standards. To me they are just “normal sized” models and anyone smaller is just anorexic. A size zero?!?!?!? I mean really!!!

You mean there’s a chance we may not be taught to hate our femininity? I don’t need to thank a goddess, we were all created this way by what some of us call God. Beautiful.

That is one beautiful lady. Absolutely gorgeous.

so 12-14 is plus!! Interesting. Most women are pluses and looking great!

(12) samantha says:

Well, nice they used a “larger-sized” woman, but as well all know, 12-14 does not a plus-size make. To me, plus size means size 16 and above. I do hope this is the beginning of a trend, because being a “real woman” myself (size 18-20), I am SO tired of seeing models in ALL magazines and catalogs looking painfully thin. Give some of us a chance, too!

This is such an amazing picture of real beauty to be printed! although size 10-12 is not a plus size ,there is nothing wrong as being size 16 or more.it depends on how you feel, you can be big but still beautiful. In malta we do fashion awards for big and beautiful people. when god created women he gave them all beauty he had in his hands. being skinny with all bines showing off is not nice at all.

(16) DSB says:

Hoooorrrrraaaaayyyy!!! Finally, a real woman in a real woman’s body gracing the pages of a fashion magazine!! This is simply fantastic!! I hope it is the beginning of what will become a permanent attitude about the female body. Sizes 8/10/12/14 are not in any way plus size. I understand that designers want their clothes to hang from stick figured models so that the clothes will be noticed and not the model. However, that should not require that real women in the real world should also be stick thin!!! And quite frankly I’m sick and tired of the term “Plus Size”!!! If we must be “labeled”, how ’bout…Real Size or Normal Size or Shapely Size or BEAUTIFUL Size, just to name a few!! Way To Go, GLAMOUR!

(17) Pam says:

Thank you for showing a normal woman for a change. I am plus size and I don’t feel so out of place now. I hope to see more of the same. No more stick thin models! Thank you.

(18) Veronica Wright says:

I am not surprized by a major magazine supporting obesity. Over 65% of America is now obese. Pictures showing fat & flabby women serve to desensitize America to obesity related health issues, not to mention that obesity related medical care are now the major cause for rising health insurance rates. On a personal note, I am a size 0. Why would I want to look at a fat woman in a magazine? I have to look at them on the street, in the office, and in the stores all day long.

in response to Oe: I’m not going to be sad – I am working hard to get rid of the little tummy I have and I hate the way she looks! Pretty face bug ugly gut. Her legs don’t look like a size 12, either . . more like an 18

(20) mercike says:

She is real woman! Like the rest of us. Love the picture. Would love to be that “plus size”.
Shees! She should be labed as “real size” not “PLUS” size. Plus size should be starting from size 20 + like me.
Thanks Julyne

(21) Monty says:

I love that they put this phone in the magazine, but am APPALLED that she is considered a plus-sized model. I agree with the other poster who said regular models should be called anorexic models and this woman should just be a model. She looks more like a 10 maybe 12 to me than a size 12-14.

it was too good to be true. I finally see a real woman on a magazine, but then I realized you guys said she is a plus size and SHE IS NOT
she is a regular size not plus.

(24) Judith Rasband AICI CIM says:

Beautiful face, real body, average size, but that tummy fold is not normal for a 20 year old woman, as assumed unless she’s just had a baby or a surgical procedure at some time producing scar tissue that causes excess weight to flop over. Been there, done that. What you’re looking at is the “muffin top” effect that develops from years of wearing low-rider pants tight around the hips. As author of FABULOUS FIT and FITTING & ALTERATION textbooks and director of the FABULOUS FIT RETREAT, I and fellow faculty are seeing young women with a second indentation about two-three inches below the natural waistline, forming a bulge in between and creating the belly flop or muffin-top effect. It makes for fitting problems in clothes and draws attention to itself when exposed. You can have fun with fashion and avoid the effect by rotating skirt and pant band positions between natural, high, and low-waist styles and don’t wear them so tight.

Women today are so plastic……….what happened to Real Women.
We were made in God’s image, why change it? Are they so insecure.
