Beauty Pet Peeve: Flat, Lifeless Long Hair

Sunday June 28, 2009
I was in London on a business trip recently and I noticed the hair trend of the moment was long, straightened hair. I think the women were hoping for sleek, but what they ended up with was flat and lifeless, which is what tends to happen when you grow thin hair long and then straighten it with a flat iron. Few of these styles had any body to them.

I don't know if British women have thin hair in general (there are a lot of natural blondes there, and individual blonde hair is thinner than dark hair) or if their hairstylists are thinning their hair out with razors, but what these styles were lacking is a good, old-fashioned beauty keyword, "body."

To add body to thin hair you can do the following:

  1. If you were born with super thin, wispy hair, don't grow it longer than your shoulders. The longer the hair, the more lifeless it becomes.

  2. If your individual hair strands are thin, but you have a lot of hair, you can grow hair long, just ask your stylist to cut in long layers. Layers add body. But make sure the stylist doesn't thin hair too much.

  3. Invest in a good thickening, volumizing spray or mousse. But a little will go a long way. Too much product will also weigh hair down.

  4. Let hair air dry. Most hair has natural wave to it. If you let hair airdry, the natural wave will add body. Scrunch hair as it dries for added wave.

  5. Consider hair extensions. Not all hair extensions are a major investment. You can get a few clip-on extensions for extra body.

Thin wispy hair. I have. Along with natural curls to boot. I’ve always long for my hair to be long, but like folks w/ straight hair, it gets lifeless and stringy. I recently cut my hair into a long bob, and my hair looks so much more healthy than the longer style I’ve been wearing, mega curls galor. Just gotta keep the frizz stuff in stock. Good luck to you folks with long straight wispy hair. Folks with curls have their own issues I rekon.

I imagine a hair cut in London is pretty expensive. Here in Scotland, a good trim costs me £50. It sometimes seems cheaper to have long wisps. ;)

no way i will wear short hair b/c mine is thin. never. i do have a lot of thin hair but layers do not work. mine doesn’t draw any gripes, even when to the small of my back. i wear bangs and it is cut in two straight lines.

way better than short hair.
