Bazaar's Big Blasted Contradiction
Tuesday December 16, 2008
Harper's Bazaar is one of my least favorite fashion magazines because I can't bother with page after page of 98-pound, 6-footers all wobbly in $6,900 chiffon. Who is going to buy a $24,995 netted (read: utterly useless) black coat (page 109) that one could make out of soda pop plastic (the ones you cut up with scissors so birds won't strangle themselves in landfills).
Anyway, on the last page where Harper's features the "What's In, What's Out" section, they dub "overly masculine menswear" out for spring and suggest flouncy feminine wear instead. Yet a quick glance through their pages and you find Kirsten Dunst dressed in menswear (page 140), Victoria Beckham in not one, but two (!), menswear outfits and another rather masculine suit on page 119.
I want to know if they are in or out because this could change my plan to dress in tuxedos all spring. (Just kidding).

Same reason I don’t read it - like anyone can actually afford that stuff. I mean a splurge on an investment handbag is one thing. But page after page of outfits that cost more than $5000 are absurd.
I find that Harpers Bazaar id my favorite fashion magazine. If you are going to start in about prices and models you might as well give it up! I personally like HB’s because at least this fashion mag recognizes women OVER the age of 40! Try and find that in any other fashion magazine! Lighten up! Fashion is only a guide. If you think you’re going to really dress like the models it’s time for a reality check!
Although I am 40 I totally disagree with Jill…unless the over 40 women she is referring to are from the show Real Housewives of Orange County. While I do agree that all fashion mags are basically a guide I am much more a fan of the “functional” mags such as Allure for beauty and Lucky for fashion and shopping. Although most of the items in fashion mags are beyond my monetary budget I can usually find a similar version of an outfit I like at a price I can afford…unless it happens to be an outfit I saw in Harper’s. And yes, I also wondered about the soda-pop plastic coat…what IS that??!! LOL
Julyne - thank you for the chuckle. Now is the time to start getting real… including about fashion, prices and body image.
