A Fancy & a Cheap Way to Exfoliate Lips

Monday December 8, 2008
The Lip Scrub by Sara HappI'm a big sucker for The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ (it's on my list of top stocking stuffers). The stuff is magic: you apply to lips, massage vigorously with your index finger and then wipe off (or lick off) the remaining sugary bits. I got mine a couple years ago, and since then the product has been mentioned in every imaginable magazine making me feel very smug about my find.

If you can't afford The Lip Scrub, which is $22, consider creating your own by mixing sugar and petroleum jelly in a bowl and then putting it in a mini container. You may have to play with the consistency but I guarantee you'll love it. Plus, it's pretty much, well....free.

That is a great idea of making your own and with Christmas around the corner this would make a great gift something made by you.

Does the sugar need to be super fine, or what texture?
Would Domino sugar do?

Regular sugar works best. I just made up a batch tonight and my lips are awesomely soft. The trick is to use 2 parts Vaseline, 1 part sugar and stir the sugar slowly into the Vaseline. I sometimes just use my finger.

Demerera sugar works best with a tiny bit of castor oil.

(5) Skin Care Recipes and Remedies says:

This is my favorite homemade lip scrub recipe:

Ingredients

* 1 teaspoon of honey
* 1 teaspoon of baking soda
* Olive oil

Mix honey and baking ingredients until the mass resembles a paste.
Apply the mix on your lips and leave it on for a couple of minutes.
Gently rub the lips.
Wash of with lukewarm water

Let the lips dry out and then apply olive oil. It will help the lips hydrate.

There is also a recipe that is very simple, too. Apply unsalted butter on your lips occasionally. That’s it. It has the same effect as the olive oil.
