The Secret to Washing Curly Hair? Don't.

By , About.com GuideOctober 7, 2008

Follow me on:

Since I am sharing beauty tips from beauty books, here's another one from "Curly Girl: The Handbook," a slender tome dedicated to the curliest among us:

This tip is from the author, Lorraine Massey. Massey used to wash her hair once a week and realized that it took about 3 days before it settled down and looked nice. One day -- on the day she was set to wash it -- she decided not to wash it because it looked great. She went another week, then two, finally three when she decided to never use shampoo again. She runs, she eats in smoky European restaurants, she swims in the ocean and everyone vouches for her: Her hair and her scalp don't smell, despite her shampoo ban!

WOW for real? My hair is baby thin fine, and very curly. It gathers every kind of smell, perfume, odor, you name it. If it don’t wash it at least 2x a week, my scalp gets wicked itchy and my hair tells a tale of every in of my life. She’s very lucky, good for her. Saves $$$$ on products.

I think she rinses her hair with water.

Isn’t that kind of unsanitary?

(5) beauty says:

Yes, it seems unsanitary, until you think that maybe we do a lot of unnatural things to ourselves for the sake of vanity. She had a picture of herself and her hair was gorgeous.

Whatever!!Who is really going to go without washing?? The coarser the hair the more frequent need to wash. Now the finer the hair, the less frequent need to wash. Medium texture, well, you fall in between.
Good riddence to the bad advice….

(7) Rica says:

I do not believe it. My hair is very curly… and I wash it twice a week.. If you don’t wash your hair, the sweat, dirt, smoke particles are GOING to accumulate on your scalp. Soon, there will be no hair LEFT on your head to wash.

I’m just sharing her tip, it’s not my tip. You can take it or leave it. Personally, if I had curly hair, I wouldn’t take her advice.

Also, it’s not true that medium hair needs washing more. The coarser the hair, the drier it tends to be and washing it only exacerbates dryness.

you know, last year i went on a shampoo-boycott, because my hair so dry and dead from all of the hot irons and hair-dying that i used. i went a good 2 months, no shampoo. just conditioner and great rinsing….

at the end of it all, my hair was in a completely different state then it was before. now i only shampoo my hair every 2 or 3 days.

(10) Erin says:

With curly hair it is best not to shampoo it too much. I shampoo about once a week, but I condition and rinse my hair out every day.

(12) Heather says:

I have curly hair but I couldn’t go without washing it because I also have dry scalp that starts to really itch after several days without shampooing. The only way to treat it is with a dandruff shampoo. I don’t wash it too much though because overwashing it dries it out even more. Oftentimes, I will just wet it and put some conditioner in it, which makes it look really pretty.

(13) Elise says:

I am 73 and finally I can really like my curly hair. I have started never shampooing my hair; I just wash thoroughly using a good water soluble conditioner (for Curly Hair) and the difference is amazing. My short frizzy, inpossible to control brillo pad had become a shining curly magnet for strangers who now keeping wanting to ‘touch’ my hair ’cause it’s so nice and soft.

So it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. Elise

I dont use shampoo either. I havn’t for 2 months now, my hair is so much healthier and is shiney. I think it depends on your hair wether this will work for you, i have curly hair and it doesnt get greasy. Some people dont need shampoo, conditioner works great i love my hair now.

I have curly hair and I have also gone on a shampoo ban. My hair has never been healthier and all of a sudden I am getting a multitude of compliments on how great my hair looks. I also had trouble growing it because of breakage. Now it is growing really well. I use honey nut shine mist on the ends if they get dry and cornstarch at the scalp if it gets greasy, which it rarely does, and I brush/comb it twice a day. I never have a problem with strange odour and my friends and family can attest to that. The body has wonderful mechanisms for self-cleansing.

(16) Kim says:

I have curly, frizzy, freaked out hair and I haven’t used shampoo for about three weeks- I have just been rinsing it with water in the shower. I have never gotten so many compliments from my coworkers or family members in my life! My hair is shiny, glossy, and has body. The best part is that it doesn’t frizz when it’s humid. I will probably wash it today though- just because my scalp is a little itchy- but then I will proably go another three weeks with out washing it. It cuts down on the cost of shampoo and the time in the morning working on my hair!

(18) Belle says:

I have curly hair and I used to wash it constantly then I realized it was not helping my hair at all. Then I had surgery so I could not wash it for about a month and it looked amazing. I tend to wash every other week now unless I straighten it then about every week.

(19) M says:

We’re so conditioned to believe the commercial products of shampoo and conditioner, etc are needed on a daily basis.
It isn’t, as someone said here, unsanitary to not shampoo everyday.
My daughter who also has thick, coarse, naturally curly hair told me of this and I now use just conditioner about every other day.
Washing your hair daily isn’t necessary and strips it of natural oils when doing so.
This is like people who shower for up to 30 or 45 minutes, but once you have cleaned everything you need to, say in 10 minutes staying in the shower longer doesn’t make you cleaner.
Same thing with feeling like you have to wash hair every day with naturally curly hair it isn’t necessary.

I have long and wavy hair. I do not play with my hair a lot and spend very little time on it. The Shielo Hydrate conditioner helps me in that.

After using Shielo’s conditioner my hair is so manageable that I do not have to blow dry my hair even and they are so soft, smooth and silky all day long, Using this conditioner can reduce your visit to a hair salon so often and you can still look beautiful.

Its smell is great too and its long lasting. Shielo has different shampoos and conditioners for different hair types and so everyone can find one suiting their hair needs. It also makes the hair less frizzy and what I do is I do not wash it out completely from my hair. I would definitely recommend thsi conditioner to anyone who wants a quick, easy and affordable solution to make theri hair soft, smooth, silky and manageable.

I’m a guy with curly hair. Know that I work in a hospital directly in close contact with patients and colleagues. I did a quick search and this came up #1, so I’m going to assume someone will benefit from this years-later comment…

My curly hair – fine, odor absorbing, and dried out even moreso if EVER washed with shampoo. Any product use is truly like holocaust (destruction by fire) for my hair.

Anyway, I stopped washing it, and it hardly even went through a stage of seeming dirty.
The theory goes that the body naturally produces enough oils for itself, and that once it adapts to it’s natural production, it begins to make just enough to be sufficient.
Well, mine has never been better-looking (or softer for that matter) just like the original article states.

No, it isn’t unsanitary. We’ve all just been trained in a materialistic, consumer society that consumption is mandatory and those who do not consume shall be ostracized! Really, all I do is wash it – water only – and comb it well, then let it dry as it will.

Maybe those with oilier hair types really do need some additional cleaning product, and I’m sure those types would believe in hair products after generations of chemical salesmen spiels. BUT I do believe many like those have gone without products and have reached the natural state of beauty, perhaps after a longer period experienced by me. Keep in mind, I was only conditioning every few days, shampooing perhaps bi-weekly or monthly before going cold turkey. Thus my body had already begun to return to it’s normal, healthy state.

Give it a shot! Save money, alleviate your needless pollution, lower your risk of cancer medley, and let your body regulate its own health. I know it sounds like a hippy/bum concept, but I’d bet many would be quite pleasantly surprised how efficient the un-chemically-treated body can really be. ;)
