Why I Hate Brow Trends

Thursday September 25, 2008
I don't care if you wear purple eyeshadow all winter and if you had Day-Glo orange toes all summer because the magazines said to do so, whatever you do, don't follow brow trends. The secret to gorgeous brows is simple: you just need to shape them. They need to look clean, precise. They should be filled in or even darkened so they don't blend into your skin, but please, never, ever pluck them "pencil thin" because a fashion magazine got desperate for a trend and decided that one should come back.

Pencil thin brows will age you 10 years.

As for bushy brows, maybe Brooke Shields looks alright with them, but not all of us would. If it suits your face, fine. Brows are simply not meant to go one way one season, another the next. They simple need to flatter. That's all.

Unfortunately, thin eyebrows come along with age for many of us, and making them appear to be more full often looks very artificial.

Hi Janet, you are right that brows thin with age. You can fill them in with special brow powders but for some people, it can look clownish. Another option is to dye the remaining brows bit darker than your hair so they pop. Good luck to you.

Just use a lighter shade on your brows than your actual hair color and make short strokes with a sharp pencil. That means sharpening the pencil every time you use it. My blonde brows disappeared by the time I was in my 40’s. It seemed like every shade of blonde was too dark for me & when I finally found a “Sun Blond” color by Loreal, they discontinued it. I can still find it on ebay & have had success using eye shadow and a brush. Be sure to keep the arch low. I noticed that as my eyes drooped with age, I tried to increase the arch by overplucking. Bad idea that I see on many, many women. Now when I apply eyebrow makeup, I’m sure to fill in slightly below the arch. It looks much more youthful & believable.

I too, have very light brows and lashes. My natural haircolor was ash blonde, But I’ve been lignt auburn to copper over the last 10 years. Maybelline made a great colored brow gel pplied with a in Auburn that was applied with a mascara type wand. I have found another solution in a product used to color gray hair, and it too is applied with a mascara type wand. It finds those tiny hairs when everyone counts!
