Katie Holmes's Newest Bob: Love it As Much As I Do?

Tuesday July 8, 2008
Katie Holmes's metamorphosis from cute to sophisticated has been phenomenal. Here, she shows off a new version of the bob she adopted back in 2007. She showed up with this cut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art back in May and I had to showcase it here.

As much as I love this cut, it wouldn't have the same impact on a blonde, in my opinion. The cut works because of the strong contrast between light (her skin) and dark (her hair). What do you think? Do you love this bob as much as I do?

Wow! Absolutely marvelous! She has transformed! I simply love it. She is the perfect example mantaining beauty after having a child. You must remain attractive especially for your husband! Go Katie!!

YES!!! I totally agree with you! She looks fabulous and I think that it wouldn’t work on a blonde….definitely. I am a blonde and I’ve imagined myself with a bob and I don’t think it would work very well…

I think her cut looks great, but I disagree with you about it looking better on brunettes. The cut looks great on blondes too.

Sorry to disagree, but I think she looks very hard … not soft and feminine at all. Soft and feminine does not mean weak … and the “smile” above looks more like a smirk.

I agree with Ciara, this cut looks great on a blonde- especially if she has a nicely tanned skin and golden highlights in her hair! Lovely if not overdone (as in a too-deeply tanned skin and bleachy-blonde looking hair.)
And here is my chance to thank you for the great job you do, Julyne! I get more good, accurate info from your column in a week than I do else where in a month or so… Keep it up, we all enjoy! :)

Yes, I love the Bob too, she has really started a trend, the bob is making its comeback, but I think its more the heaviness of hair a brunette seems to have , because in the picture above, Katie doesn’t look light at all, but I agree, a blond wouldn’t carry it,,Daisey

It’s gorgeous. The one good thing that’s come from her association With Posh is her style. I luv this cut on her.

My friend, a blonde, has this same cut and it looks great. It depends on the face shape, etc. INHO, not as much the skin color, etc. As to how it looks on her, it is great, but with the stylists and everyone else surroundng her, she’d have no reason not to look great. And as to her doing this for a HIM, forget it. We are past the 19th century.

Thanks for your comments! It’s great to hear the various opinions on a look I adore. I agree that you can get contrast with dark skin, light hair as well. The contrast is what makes this cut so absolutely striking IMO.

As for Meghana, I hope you go for the Brazilian, if anything, just for the experience. My advice is take an Advil and a friend because you may need the Advil for pain and the friend to giggle with afterwards…

HI,
I really don’t care for this hairstyle on her at all. To me she looks better with longer hair with some wave to it. Judy K. Chicago.

I love her cut. It is testimony to the “classic” nature of the cut that it still is as chic and popular today as it was in the roaring 20’s when the “flappers” wore it. I have a wonderful picture of my grandmother (now 97yrs old) as a teen wearing a the cut Katie is now sporting. Great cuts endure the test of time and are always in good taste.

I think it’s harsh on her. Actually I think it looks more like a synthetic wig than real hair. I know I’d look ridiculous with bangs and hair that short.

(16) Bonnie says:

I think the cut is timeless and it looks great on her. I’ve been wearing some version of a bob since 1977. I occasionally ventured to something different over the years, but always came back to the bob. Now I’m wearing a swing bob, but I think I like Katie’s version better. I’m blonde and my skin is the lightest shade of ivory (some ivory makeup is too dark for me). This cut works for me because I “understand” makeup (I’ve been a makeup junkie since age 14). This cut also makes the eyes pop. I also love bright lipstick with it (love red, just go easy on the eye makeup).

I beg to differ, blonds would also look great in the bob. As a matter of fact so would red heads.
P.S
I love the style
