Elizabeth Arden's Prevage: Must Buy or All Hype?

Thursday April 19, 2007
Elizabeth Arden's Prevage is one of the most highly touted anti-wrinkle creams on the market today. For a couple years now, beauty editors have raved about it, dermatologists have prescribed it in its more potent 1% form and a saleswoman at Sephora informed me it was a "miracle product." Just this month InStyle magazine named it one of this year's best buys.

Curious about all the hype, I started researching user reviews. I came upon angry review after angry review of users who reported developing rashes, hives and itchy skin. Log onto Makeupalley.com to see for yourself. For every one person who loved Prevage, there were two who hated it. See how many stars we gave it here on About.com.

I'm curious about my reader reactions to Prevage. If you've tried it or know someone who did, weigh in below. Photo courtesy Pricegrabber.

(1) Morgan says:

I also developed a rash. I went to my dermatologist who said that a lot of people seem to be allergic to it. He also said that he does not think it’s effective to begin with. This is info coming from one of the foremost dermatology practices in Chicago’s Gold Coast. Unfortunately, I bought Prevage without even consulting them.

I wish I had waited for your review. However, it’s this review that is finally convincing me your recommendations aren’t bought by the companies.

broke out from it – total waste of money!

(3) danni says:

I use the Prevage Eye and Prevage MD and I love them both. No reations just results- I wear much less make-up if any at all. My skin looks healthy and glowing. Maybe everyone who had that rash- had skin that was too sensitive or you used too much?
Anyway, I love it!

(4) Fiona says:

Always read the ingredients to check if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients and then patch test or use a sample first before buying any new product.

(5) Kate says:

I too broke out in a rash that made my eye swell shut. I’ve thrown it out, what a waste of $150.

(6) beauty says:

Hi Morgan,

I want to assure you and my readers that I am never paid for my recommendations by a company. As a journalist, I take ethics very seriously. So does About.com and its parent company, the New York Times. The ads on this site have absolutely nothing to do with the content.

When I heartily recommend a product, it is just that, a hearty recommendation. I try to include comments from other reviewers on other sites, such as Makeupalley.com. What I have learned over the years is that there is no such thing as a perfect product. Every item out there, no matter how popular, will be disliked by some users.

Cheers!

(7) Shannon from Makeup Minute says:

Yikes. I have a sample of this just waiting for me to try out to write a review. Now I am a little nervous. The last thing I want is to break out in a rash.

Julyne–I wouldn’t worry about any inferences to people thinking you are bought by the beauty brands. I get that all too often and ended up making a disclosure policy just so that people would stop asking (infering). Integrity in this business is everything. ;)

(8) Susan says:

I found this site by accident when I was going online to buy more Prevage because a friend told me it’s now available directly on the Elizabeth Arden website with no tax and free shipping, and I live nearly an hour drive from the nearest store where I can get it.

I tried Prevage starting about 6 months ago just before Thanksgiving. Following the directions, I tested on the tender part of my forearm for a couple of days first. No problems whatsoever. I’ve been using it religiously and it *IS* a MIRICLE PRODUCT and worth every penny. A friend I hadn’t seen in awhile actually wondered if I had any “work” done which I never have and never would. I could use this product 10 years and never come close to what people spend on surgery. I love Prevage and have ended up recommending it to a handful of friends — none of whom have had a reaction either.

My guess is that people with problems go out on the web to research and commiserate when they find each other, but those of us who have gotten amazing results with it don’t necessarily go out on the web to research and post. Case in point, I almost didn’t bother to post this, but since I came across the negative comments I only thought it reasonable to provide info from someone who uses it daily, has gotten great results I could have never imagined and absolutely LOVES it.

(9) Claudia says:

The 2% of users that develop rashes (according to Allergan) I would say is a huge under-estimate. Everyone I know that has used Prevage has developed this – in fact the makeup personnel at Nordstrom’s did also and Nordstrom no longer carries Prevage. I ended up having to take cortisone to get rid of the ugly blistering diaper rash on my face.

May 23, 2007 at 10:37 am
(10) Angelina says:

Nordstrom still carries it – because I just bought it from there. I haven’t tried it yet and I’m planning on doing the “patch test” by putting it on my arm and waiting a few days. Too bad I spent so much money on it, without knowing if I’m going to be allergic or not. I honestly didn’t know there would be such a risk of this. I’ll post again to say how it goes…

May 25, 2007 at 1:48 pm
(11) Darlene says:

I’ve used Prevage for several months now and have had no allergic reactions. I do have mildly sensitive skin and suffer from seasonal allergies. I haven’t decided whether or not it’s worth the extra money (I’ve used Active C in the past). I’ll try it for a few more months and then decide if I’ll stick with it or switch back to Active C.

(12) Christine says:

I use it. I love it. Works great. No proglems. Highly recommend. Thanks for tip about buying online at Elizabeth Arden with no tax/shipping. Seems to last forever, but will place my next order direct to save the tax.

May 30, 2007 at 2:52 pm
(13) Carol says:

I LOVE, LOVE this product! My skin feels and looks great after only two weeks of using it. First of all let me say that there are two differnet types of Prevage. The type sold at Nordstroms has 0.5% Idebenone which is a powerful antioxidant. The kind sold in doctors offices has 1% idebenone. It is not really an “allergic” reaction, but it can cause irritation to sensitive skin, which is why a patch test is recommended by the company. Also, they recommend using it every other day to start as it is a very strong antioxidant! Also, I can tell you that Allergan (the Prevage manufacturer) will refund your money 100% if you developed a reaction to the product. Call Allergan at 1-800-377-7790.

June 1, 2007 at 12:47 pm
(14) Marcia says:

I also love Prevage. It is without a doubt the best skin care product I have ever tried — and I’ve tried many.

I also use the .5% type that is sold on the Elizabeth Arden website, not the type from the doctors’ office.

June 14, 2007 at 2:30 am
(15) Shauna says:

I used this product for a good 3 month and loving the result. Until one day, all of a sudden, without any changes in skin care or environment, I woke up with rashes, Hives and swell skin. My skin was so itchy that I couldn’t stop scratching it. The reaction faded and I ended up with lines under my eyes due to all the scratching and rubbing. I tried once more on my jaw area and immediately broke out again that same night. There was no change in my skincare routine and product. I have no idea what caused it, only thing I know is Prevage is definately the product that caused all the reactions. Hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

June 20, 2007 at 10:43 am
(16) Pat says:

I bought both Prevage Eye and Prevage. I immediately started having itchy eyes. The day a colleague mentioned that she had never noticed any crepiness beneath my eyes until that day (I had told her about the problems I was having with Prevage). I think the crepiness was from rubbing my itching eyes! That was the day I quit using it. Everything is back to normal. I may test again with Prevage only and totally avoid the eye area. Otherwise, total waste of $265!

June 22, 2007 at 8:32 am
(17) Carolyn says:

I was sceptical about whether any of these things really work, so I tried it on the lines on one side of my mouth for a month or so. A definite, noticeable difference, so am now using it everywhere. A good product!

June 24, 2007 at 11:26 pm
(18) Addalie says:

June 24, 2007 I had permanent tattooed eyeliner done six years ago in 2001. October of 2006 I started using Eye Prevage. During the next 5 or 6 months my eyelids became swollen, thickened along the lash line, and constantly peeled. I was treated for Blepharitis. At that time (March 2007)I stopped using eye prevage. After no improvement I have seen eye doctors, dermatologist, and allergist. I have been told that something must have made me become allergic to my eyeliner after six years. I have never been allergic to anything before. Your eye prevage list an ingredient of Red 40 (CI 16035). Is this a dye? Please help me find out what might have caused this cross-reaction to cause this allergic reaction. What other ingredients might be in eye prevage to cause this problem? Any help would be appreciated. I have an appointment with an allergist specialist soon. If no treatment can be found (I have been on 3 treatments so far) surgery to remove my eyeliner will be my only choice. Thank you.

(19) Susannah says:

A relative used it – first night, no problem. Used it a second night – she awoke the next morning to find her lower face swollen and shiny, and bright red. She then developed blisters. Two shots of cortisone from her doctor plus topical cream were necessary to reduce the swelling. It took 5 days to regain her normal appearance. And yes, she did the spot test, first.

July 5, 2007 at 10:02 am
(20) Judy says:

I liked the product until I broke out in a rash all over my neck and face with whelps, itching and swelling. I will try to return the product for a refund. I would hope that Elizabeth Arden does offer a full money back refund for such a problem. I have used Elizabeth Arden products for years with no problem. I will never use this product again.

July 7, 2007 at 5:29 pm
(21) Julie says:

I also had a very bad reaction from using Prevage. Even though I didn’t put any on my eyelids, per se, they were so swollen I could barely see. Red rash all over my neck too. Horrible. lasted for three days! Julie

July 20, 2007 at 5:27 pm
(22) Sarah says:

I have been using Prevage for 2 years, it is truely a Miracle product. My skin is amzaing. Its the only product that ever got rid of my dry skin and also the pimple breakouts I sometimes suffered. I swear by it. I get comments all the time on how great my skin looks.

August 5, 2007 at 4:01 pm
(23) Angela says:

I have somewhat sensitive skin so the sales consultant at Dillard’s suggested I use it every other day for a couple of weeks to allow my skin to ‘get used to it’. Didn’t have any reactions at all.

I am on my third bottle and it seems to last forever. I love the results! I have melasma and it has really helped lighten the spots(more than skin bleach did). Also my pores are much smaller and my skin is absolutely glowing.

Will continue to buy…LOVE IT!

August 7, 2007 at 10:38 am
(24) Kim says:

Got a sample of Prevage for a local dept store, and after the first day, broke out in hives, and a rash that was red and itchy, and horrible. Threw the product away !!!!

August 13, 2007 at 1:50 pm
(25) Karen says:

I loved how Prevage made my skin look after just a few weeks of use. Unfortunately, I, too, woke up one morning with an itchy rash all over my face, so I can’t use it anymore. And I have never had a problem like this with any other skin care product. If you don’t develop the rash, it is a great product, but be careful.

August 13, 2007 at 10:57 pm
(26) Karen J. Cartee says:

Love it. Saw immediate results. I bought it through Bloomingdales, but I can’t find it any of the stores in the Deep South. I have hypersensitive skin, and it didn’t bother me. I am thrilled to find something without vitamin C, which will put me in a benedryl fog for days.

August 14, 2007 at 4:10 am
(27) Anne Butler says:

I have never in all my years of using a variety of creams broke out like I did after 3 days using this product, I went back to the department store consultant to give her my feedback at her request, to show her the results and she offered no explanation, advice or compensation. In other words she was not bothered and should not be a consultant. I will never use any Elizabeth Arden products again.

August 16, 2007 at 10:11 pm
(28) Zoe says:

I started using Prevage 0.5% in June 2007 and loved the results! Reduction in fine lines around my eyes, smaller pores, more radiant skin…two weeks after using it I awoke with a fine, red rash all over my face. It took days to go away. I hoped it was a result of other dermatologist recommended creams I’ve been using on my face, but the process of elimination led to the Prevage I had been using. I still have my receipt so hopefully I can get a refund….

August 19, 2007 at 10:50 pm
(29) CJ says:

If you find that your skin has an adverse reaction to Prevage, take it with your receipt to the Elizabeth Arden counter where you purchased it, if you purchased through a department store. Most dept. stores, with your receipt (and assuming that you haven’t used up 2/3 of the product) will give you a refund or store credit. If not, speak to the store manager.

I’ve been usinng Prevage for two years and my skin feels like a baby’s bottom!

August 21, 2007 at 9:49 am
(30) Barb says:

I’ve been using this since April. I have had amazing results. No rash as yet and I’m a pretty fair and sensitive skinned redhead. The improvement in my skin is nothing short of miraculous. I’m almost 48 years old and my daughter’s friends moms all think I’m in my early thirties. If only….I also bought mine from my doctor’s office perhaps that makes a difference….?

August 30, 2007 at 9:59 am
(31) Vicki says:

Hi,

I was given a sample of this and used a small amount on my cheeks and neck. the next monday i woke up an itchy neck and have developed a full rash on my neck, chest and arms with swollen eyes and blotchy face. Beware of this product, it have more warnings on it!!!

September 18, 2007 at 4:28 pm
(32) Kelly says:

I absolutely love this product! As with anything, there is always a possibility of an allergic reaction. That is why they recommend the patch test. They also recommend that you start using a pea sized amount of product every other day in the beginning. Most people have a reaction due to over-use of the product. Elizabeth Arden and Allergan both stand behind their product, so if you experience an allergic reaction you should take it back. It’s ridiculous to throw this product away.

September 23, 2007 at 8:41 pm
(33) Susie says:

Now I am all worried! I bought this today at Dillard’s. The SA (counter manager) painted my whole face with this! She never mentioned reactions. So far I am ok, it’s been several hours. I will do patch test anyway.

October 4, 2007 at 12:11 am
(34) Maria says:

I got a sample from my sister and I couldn’t wait to use it, so I did last night. I woke up with a rash and itch on my face. I was very disappointed. I should have done the patch test first.

October 13, 2007 at 9:02 pm
(35) cassandra says:

Well, I have read all the comments. Now I wish I had not. The power of suggestion in this case is not helpful. I can only say I have been using the product for 3 months, no rashes, no itching, just smoother skin and reduced lines. I feel more attractive every day and in my 50’s that is important. Now lets hope that power of suggestion won’t sabotage my skin rejuvenation with Prevage. sandi

October 13, 2007 at 9:38 pm
(36) beauty says:

Dear Sandi, I wouldn’t worry about breaking out because of your fears regarding what you’ve read here. This product is truly a miracle worker for many women, yet others have experienced serious issues (hives and rashes). I do think everyone should keep in mind that while hives and rashes are bad, and you should discontinue a product that causes such bad effects, redness and peeling are natural effects of using anti-aging products. Many women abandon products too soon, but you do have to stick with it for a few months to see the true benefits. Redness and peeling decrease over time, leaving you with smooth, baby-soft skin and fewer lines and wrinkles.

October 21, 2007 at 3:26 pm
(37) Andy says:

I just wanted to let you guys know that there is a VERY minimal chance that someone will have an allergic reaction from Prevage (1 in 1000) when used correctly… I find that some beauty advisors fail to mention proper usage instructions at time of purchase. Because there is such a high concentration of idebenone(.5%) It will take a little time for your skin to adjust to it, and overuse or incorrect application can of course lead to a reaction with any topical product. Usage instructions for Prevage are as follows: ONE pump applied to face area, and ONE pump applied to neck ONCE at night for one week. After one week, you may proceed to use it twice per day, following the instructions mentioned above. IMPORTANT: DO NOT use Prevage directly after or during an aggressive skincare regimen(i.e. peels, mirodermabrasion, exfoliation) Use an spf of at least 15 during the day and keep skin well hydrated. Do not use in conjunction with any retinoids of any harsh chemicals. When used correctly this product is gentle enough for all skintypes and extremely effective to both correct and prevent photoaging of the skin.

October 21, 2007 at 3:35 pm
(38) Andy says:

Dear Barb
You purchased Prevage MD. It is the exact same formulation as the Prevage available at prestige department stores. The difference being that the Prevage MD you purchased has a higher concentration of idebenone(1%) vs. Prevage, which has a concentration of .5%. Both have the same clinical results, but you will have paid a little bit more, and been given proper usage instructions by your practitioner.

October 21, 2007 at 3:55 pm
(39) Andy says:

Once you have an allergic reaction to Prevage, you will never be able to use ANY Prevage products again. Because of incorrect usuage(in most cases- too much too soon or) your system will become aggrevated by idebenone(it’s main ingredient) This is true for anything that your body reacts to. THIS IS WHY USAGE IS SOOO VERY IMPORTANT. Even if you’ve been using Pevage for an extended time with no problems, if you start to use it incorrectly(usually putting more than one pump on entire face) you could stand the chance of having a reaction. Also, face products should NEVER be applied anywhere near the eye area(they are not opthamologist tested!!) Use the skeletal structure of your face as an outline: face products to be used only on the outside of cheek and brow bones. The eye are is naturally dry, so face product will migrate to this area if applied too closely. Additionally, both Prevage eye and Prevage night(available soon) are encapsulated. This means that they are time released over a preiod of 10 hours and are virtually unreactive at all. Of course, proper usage is still very important.

it evens out my skin tone, makes it glow and tightens the pores. I do not see any difference on my fine lines though. (sadly) Anyone out there have advice?

October 31, 2007 at 8:27 pm
(42) Deb says:

I bought it for my husband over a year ago (at Ulta cosmetic store) and his skin became sensitive and a bit red after a few days. It sat unused on his counter for months and then I thought I’d try it. Didn’t do a patch test, started using it once every other day then increased to every day. I think it made my skin glow but didn’t notice any fine line reduction. My dermotologist said it’s the single best proactive thing I can do for my skin. I ran out a few weeks ago and haven’t replaced it yet – now I’m scared that I might react this time!

November 3, 2007 at 3:21 pm
(43) Debby says:

I had a slight rash the first time I used it in the summer, so I put it away and just tried it again the other day. What a horrible rash I’ve got now! At the price of this product you would think some warning might be mentioned.
(A spot test on the arm revealed nothing.)

November 8, 2007 at 3:24 pm
(44) Almost 40 says:

Prevage works. I use it every night. I was a previous sun-worshipper and Prevage turned back the hands of time for me. It works. I love it and will continue to use it for life. I haven’t experienced ANY negative side effects.

I love it! I’ve been using Prevage Eye for about 6 months now and no problems whatsoever. It’s definitely worth the money!

(46) Lauren says:

Prevage MD initially caused my skin to break out in a mild rash. Eventually, though, I must have developed a tolerance to it. I’ve used it for over 1 year now with no adverse effects. This is the only product I’ve ever used that caused friends to comment favorably on the appearance of my skin & question what I’ve been using. I love it & highly recommend it.

November 27, 2007 at 11:24 pm
(47) Mary says:

I started using Pravage MD 3 weeks ago. I very sensitive skin, Retinol A makes my skin dry to the point of cracking. Sunscreens for the most part irritate my skin to the point it is painful. This product makes my skin soft. I do need to make sure and apply moisturizer daily but that is nothing now for me. As far as lines and wrinkles….after 3 weeks
50% + are gone and the rest are fading fast. This product is a 10!

December 14, 2007 at 9:58 am
(48) Beth says:

I have been using Prevage for about 2 months with no adverse reaction. I’ve noticed a remarkable difference in my skintone and lines. I only use it once a day in the morning and follow with Elizabeth Arden moisturing lotion. I will keep just using one pump a day and hope I don’t have an adverse reaction because I love this stuff!

December 21, 2007 at 10:51 am
(49) Miri says:

I just bought prevage md. I used it for the first time last night. I did not do a test patch, because my skin never seems to have a adverse reaction to skin products. Now I am really wishing I had done a test patch. I will repost how it goes. :)

(50) Cathy Flynn says:

I’m 46 years old and used to teach swimming lessons and lifeguard (so quite a bit of sun damage, splotchiness, patches of thick, flaky skin at times. Prevage was recommended to my by a physician. I have been getting quite a few comments about my appearance lately – such as “you look so refreshed and rested,” “your eyes look so bright and vivid today” (the contrast with the skin is better?), etc. So far, I love it. My skin feels better too. And I have red hair, fair skin and allergies – no problems yet with allergic reaction to the product. Cathy

(51) Miri says:

Well I have been using prevage md for about 2 weeks. I am maybe seeing some slight improvement in texture. I was very surprised at how drying this product is. It reminds me of Retin A and acts as a very strong exfolliant for me. I had expected to use this product as a moisterizer. However this product is way too drying for that. I am also having trouble using it under the eye area as it really dries the delicate area out. Does anyone else use prevage md under the eye?

(52) Lanette says:

My comment is the same as I saw on this web sit. But, I used it for 1 month, and it was great, then, yuck, a terrible rash. Since I had changed more than one item I had been using, I tried Prevage by itself, well, Im on my way to the doctor’s office. I am alergic to Sulfa, found that warning only on the web site, not on the can.
Lanette 1-10-08

My skin was so itchy that I couldn’t stop scratching it. The reaction faded and I ended up with lines under my eyes due to all the scratching and rubbing. I tried once more on my jaw area and immediately broke out again that same night. There was no change in my skincare routine and product. I have no idea what caused it, only thing I know is Prevage is definately the product that caused all the reactions. Hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

I first used the Prevage MD with my Obagi in the mornings. I loved the product but wasn’t sure if it was the obagi masking and covering for prevage. Well I ran out of both. I next moved on to the eye cream for prevage and this works GREAT! I bought the new Prevage Night cream 2 weeks ago and so far I have no complaints. I have very sensitive skin and a semi for of rosacea in winter, but I had no bad reaction to the prevage products. I’m going to try the regular prevage cream since I’m still a bit young to be using Prevage MD for more mature skin.

(55) Miri says:

Well I stopped using it. I really wanted it to work… had heard great things about prevage, but it was terrible. It dried my skin out horribly. I don’t know if it was an allergic reaction or just a very harsh product.I am going back to kinerase which I love. This was a total waste of money. I would recommend anyone wanting to try it get a sample first.

(56) Terre says:

I am 61 and have had great skin my entire life…am starting to get a few wrinkles so when I was at the Elizabeth Arden counter, the sales consultant said that Prevage would be terrific for me..All she told me was to put on moisturizer after Prevage. Well, I purchased and applied Prevage 5 days ago. My lower face and neck broke out in bumps, raw skin and rash…My neck was expecially itchy and a prominent red crease, line appeared out of nowhere. I have not been to a doctor yet as I just got back home from a trip.
I have never had a problem before and am very upset about not being given any information as to its possible side effects.

(57) Susan says:

I have been an aesthetic nurse for 6 years with a laser speciality. I have used Prevage MD since it came out. If I had to give up all my skin care products except 1, this would be what I would keep. In fact since I have been using it, I do not buy other skin care products.
Some people can get a reaction. That is why we give a sample and instructions in how to start using the product. A VERY small percentage have had a reaction when used properly. I do encourage people to buy the physician strength and not the over-the-counter version for several reasons. You should get complete instructions from your health care professional who will then monitor your progress. The physician strength is most areas is less expensive that the OTC version. Before and after pictures I take show amazing results!

(58) Yaprak says:

I first tried prevage 3 months ago. I followed the instruction and did a patch test for several days with no adverse effect, so I started using it on my face. Everything was fine for a couple of weeks, but then one day I woke up with a noticeable rash on my jawline. I stopped using it for over a month then tried to give it another go. I woke the next morning with with swelling ,rash itchiness on one side of my face, the next morning things had gotten worse and my eyes had swollen shut and the rash, itchiness and redness had made its way all over my face and own my neck. I have just been to hospital and they have given me steroids. It has been 3 days now I hope this goes away soon! This product should have more warnings on it that you can gradually develop an allergy to it. I think not enough follow up testing has been done on it. The percentage of people getting an immediate reaction to it may be low, but I am positive the percentages of people reacting to it over a long term is much higher and the company must be questioned over their research and how they got their figures.

Used Prevage over 2 1/2 years, loved it, got a friend started on it. Two months ago, under my eyes started swelling, face and neck itching, burning sensation. I went to the doctor, he says something I’m allergic to and gave me steroid creme to use 2 weeks. Still trying to figure out what I was allergic to, my friend comes in a week later broke out on face and neck with rash. We both stopped using Prevage and did an arm test and broke out with rashes. Funny thing is, my eyes have been swollen for over two years, everytime I take a picture, I look hideous. My husband chuckles and says, it’s just weight gain. I guess I’ve been allergic to it from the beginning and didn’t realize it.

I just purchased the .5% Prevage from a retailer on Ebay…thought I would try it at a lesser price first…I received my full size pump bottle yesterday. The cream is almost a tinted brown color. Is the full price cream purchased directly in stores or from Elizabeth Arden this same color? I was wondering if I may have purchased an outdated inferior item?

Thanks for your reply…

(61) Jane says:

I tried Prevage MD and samples of the Arden Prevage Eye cream at the same time. Patch test was fine. After using the Prevage MD for a day or two, my face was itchy, blotchy, reactive, and broke out. This took a couple of weeks to resolve after I stopped using it.
The eye cream seemed fine and initially I thought I noticed improvement, so I kept using it. After a month or two, I began to wonder if my eyes actually looked worse not better. I never did see the miracle improvement as described- eventually the skin looked crepy (never had before) and the crows-feet deepened. Skin under eyes looked dry. I didn’t have pain or stinging, just the worsening/ deepening of lines over time. I have to assume this was caused by low grade irritation from the product, and discontinued it a week ago. Now am using a moisturizing healing eye cream (Jan Marini) and the crepiness has almost disappeared.
I have fairly sensitive skin, but have used both Cellex C and SkinCeuticals Vit C with absolutely no problems, also glycolics in the past. I will never use Prevage again. It may work well for some, but for many it is just too harsh. I haven’t known anyone personally who described it as highly effective…

I have been using Prevage for over a year and have seen a significant improvement in my skin tone, texture, wrinkle reduction and over all glow. I have added the new Prevage night cream to my skin care and see even more improvement. I am 54 years old and feel my skin has only gotten years younger with these products.

I’ve been using Prevage for about 3 months now. I have sensitive skin and I have never been able to put anything on my skin. I tried this product and I LOVE it. I feel bad for those who are breaking out in rashes. I have not experienced that and I hope I don’t. I have noticed a reduction in the fine wrinkles coming onto my face and neck. My pores are much smaller and my make up goes on soooooo smooth. I’m in the military so I can get this product at a much lower cost than buying in the civilan sector, and I don’t have to pay for shipping charges or taxes. I will continue to use this product. I haven’t shared it too much because I feel like it’s my little secret….

I too had an intense reaction. I went to allergist after having an inching and hive type bumps on super swollen lips. First I though could I be having some delayed herpes cold sore. I have not had them but the websites talk about itching and tinglingand dormant infection. No I was told by an allergist that they were not cold sore but he could not find the cause. I started using Prevage again and the symtoms were back. Stopped and the syptoms went away. I did this twice just to confirm it was the Prevage. Adding insult to injury when I called Arden community relation said contact the company who sold the product to you. They should (should?) take it back. Well I bought off ebay from a med spa going out of business I figured they were sealed and current on the exp date. Arden is a good company…no reason to think twice. Buyer beware. My two containers cost 105 each with shipping. I am out of luck. This is a rip off Arden should pull the product and reimuburse for those with a reaction. How about my med bills not to mention discomfort. Think twice before you use this or any other Arden products. Shame on them!

I am addicted to this product. I started using Prevage about 2 months ago, and I saw improvement in my skin the first week. I purchase it from my doctor; the phyisicans formula contains a higher percentage of the active ingredient Idebenone than the department store version. I stopped in at her office this morning, and jokingly asked when I could purchase it by the case!! Prevage is pricey, but let’s face it, we only have one face, and it pays to take good care of it!

Hi, Just discovered this site while buying more Elizabeth Arden Prevage products online. Have been using products for about a month and love them. Would recommend anyone to try. No rash, irritations etc. Started using slowly so skin could get use to it. With any product there will always be a number of people with negative results. Negative results seen to get highlighted for the most part while good results tend to go under the radar. Cheers Nina

I just wanted to give my 2 cents as a 21 y.o male.

So my mother told me I should try Prevage to “fix” my pores, and I decided to try the Night Cream version and it’s awesome. My pores look better, and my mild acne seems to have disappeared. Overall, my skin has definitely improved.

P.S. My mother uses the serum and loves it.

I just bought the product today, and didn’t try a test patch. Didn’t see that on the directions Anywhere on my starter kit. Wish I had done a patch test now. I guess I will start out REAL slow, like every other day one pump at night.
After reading the comments it seems strange that people can use it for months, and then wake up with this horrible rash, and itching, and swelling. For the people who don’t have those problems seem to really love it. It seems like such a gamble that I am surprized that I haven’t seen Elizabeth Arden Law Suits over this product.

Just wondering how long it typically takes before a person gets the rash, (when used as prescribed .5% )

Thanks for the warning everyone!

(69) Sara Otto says:

Loved it, but it didn’t love me… Honestly, this is a great product and does produce amazing results, but if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies, you may have trouble with it. I used it for about a week, and my skin looked so good. Then I became very allergic to it, and had to give up the one product I’ve found that works. In hindsight, I should have gotten a sample before I bought a full-sized bottle. People are allergic to peanuts, shellfish, cats… that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed by everyone else!

May 8, 2008 at 4:03 pm
(70) Sara says:

Forgot to mention… According to my doctor, if you are allergic to this you will react to it despite a slow start, or how much you use. I experienced a few minor allergy symptoms, quit for a month and missed the results. I put on the tiniest bit, sloughed off the dead skin… it really works… and immediately washed it off. I woke up the next morning swollen eyes and an itchy sunburn rash. There is no permanent damage, nothing to sue over, just an allergic reaction.

love this..I am 51 with good skin and I’ve taken care of my skin most all my life
but still wanted to try more then my stable C green tea serum and other things.
I found this on the contrary to other posters to be very gentle! I even use it under my eyes…the face cream.
All my life until I got older I became less senstive, thank goodness b/c it this so nice sinks in and some drivers side dark spots are fading after years of using C…it just makes my skin plumper.
Now I’m on it now a month so we will see,
I hope no reaction occurs now at this late date, if I do react to anything it will be in 24 hrs. or overnight, so far so good!
I love this light treatment cream and I’d be a sponsor if they’d allow it :)
I say sample anything as I do with just about all products if possible before buying.

Gottschalks is having a 55+ sale with no tax this Thu. so I will get it at a discounted price. About $115 rather than the $150 regular price. 5/27/08

I applied prevage before I slept. I woke with a moon face(swollen), with sevee itching and burning. My lips starting breaking and bleeding. This happened for the fourth time. I gave an excuse sayng may be I used some othe product during that time. But now I know for sure that I a allergic to Prevage. Even for me there were few days I an count that my skin looked great. And also I noticed frm reviews tat it works better for the older age group atleast above 45 yrs age. I am 30 yrs old.

(75) Robert, Dermatologist says:

I like this product! When used for 30 days +, the firmness is better, more even toned and wrinkles seem to fade..The idebenone is a good antioxidat but it can cause rashes in some cases.
People with urtecaria is more prone to devenlope rashes. If you’re in to getting the PrevageMd
, ask for a sample in the shop. Or try a pea-sized drop behind the ear. I dont think it matters if you’re getting a 0.5% or 1%..
if you’re sensitive it doesn’t matter, if you’re having a sensitized skin you will react
on the 0.5%. A good choice for idebenone is coenzyme q10, not as processed as idebenone, and not so allergenic.

(76) Cheryl says:

a useful product.
Useful info: age 61, non-moker,skin used to be oily, now is normal.

I’ve used Prevage – the type sold for eye area, not the stronger Rx stuff – for about 3-4 months. I use it sparingly; also am sure to use sun block. It isn’t an overnight miracle and it has not given me rashes. My skin used to be oily, but menopause has moved it to normal/dry

Over time my under and side eye area has become smoother. Also use it on my upper lip and think that it is slowly decreasing the lines there. ( don’t have a before pix to compare). My use has been pretty regular, but I avoid AM application if I’m going to be in the sun all day. No proof that this is helpful in preventing sensitivity, but it seems prudent.

Bottom line: I will buy more. I will also resist the urge to seek out the stronger Rx version, or to apply it all over, because I want to avoid developing a sensitivity. It would be good if the company ( Arden but the source is Allergan) would compile data to identify the extent of problem, and what triggers the reactions.
HINT
Get a SAMPLE first to see if you are allergic. Poke a TINY hole in the sample package with a needle. That’s all you need to get enough for under eye application. That little sample will last a few days, sufficient time to test for a reaction.

I have been using Prevage for about 3 weeks. I started off using it at night and in the morning. And I did break out with a red face and bumps. The first time I also put it on my eyes and a few days later woke up with the most swollen puffy eyes.

But, I cut down the usage to every other day, and went off of it for a week, and am now using it day and night with no reaction at all. So it is doing great!.

Used 1% for about two weeks without a problem. Woke up on a Saturday morning with a very swollen, red face and eyes. The itching was unbearable. I used benadryl oral and cream, as well as cortisone creams to try to get the rash and swelling to back off. I have never had a reaction like this. I’m glad to know this is the culprit cause it’s the only recent change I had made to my skin routine.

I first tried prevage when it 1st came out (before it became Elizabeth Arden) & had a slight reaction to it (looked like I had a perpetual sunburn), so I stopped using it for a couple of years, 2 months ago I bought prevage again on the airplane, used it and woke up over the weekend with a completely swollen face/neck, I didn’t realize it was a prevage reaction, this morning I used it about 7 am and by 10 am my face got itchy and by now 8 pm it ’s really really really swollen (face neck eyelids etc)

I just hope that it goes away by tomorrow??

Prevage on a 4-yr-old?!? Read on….I’m a 40-yr-old female: saw Prevage at Costco (San Diego, CA) for $109 and thought it had to be good because of the price, though I had never heard of it. I told my sister that I was going to send some to her and she told me about this site.

I’ve been using for only 2 weeks and also put on my 4-yr-old girl and neither of us has had any reaction. After reading the postings today, however, I will stop using on my girl, as I never thought that this was such a controversial product with such extreme reactions.

Bottom line: if it’s being sold at Costco, my guess is that it must be doing more people good than bad?!?

I loved this product at first after using it for about one month. I then started to notice my eyes were puffy and red in the morning. Other areas of my face was red and burning. I paid close attention and tried an on/off test for a few weeks. When I didn’t use it a few days, skin would clear up. Use it again, redness and burning, itchy would come back. I think it’s a good product but may not work with certain skin types. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that I’m going to be able to use it.

(87) Gina says:

I have used Prevage for over a year now and never had a problem, and I loved the results. Then my “skin care junkie” attitude kicked in and I decided to try another product with Prevage, big mistake. Prevage is not like a lot of other products that you can layer, it is serious skin care and should be used as directed. I do believe that it can be too strong for sensitive skin but if you can use it.. you are a lucky person! The results are wonderful.

(88) patricia says:

I love the Prevage. I had a facial for the first time in literally years; my facialist warned me about the risk of rash, and had me test it on my arm for several days first before letting me buy it. I can already tell a big difference in some discoloration over my cheeks. This stuff is potent, so i would warn everyone to have a facial, have them test it on your skin before you buy.

I was specifically looking for peoples opinion on this product. Interestingly, I am so sensitive to most products that I cannot use Clarins skin products, Oil of Olay…really just about everything. Yet, I had a facial at EA and bought the prevage night cream. I had no rash and absolutely love the feeling. Most products make me itch or burn even if they do not cause a rash. This product did not. I am not sure about the other facial products on this list but i do love the night cream for what it is worth.

I had been using the entire Prevage line for approximately 2 1/2 years. Just recently, I’ve been waking up with itchy red scales on my face, a puffy undereye area and an itchy neck. Not knowing it was the Prevage or something else, I quit using it for a week and the problem cleared up. I tried it again and had the same negative result. I tested it again after two weeks of not using it, and it happened again. I really loved the results of Prevage but can no longer use it, and am switching over to the RevaleSkin line of products that have the coffeeberry antioxidant.

(92) Yvonne says:

I bought this some 3 weeks ago,and am loving it so far! My skin has always been in pretty good shape as far as wrinkles (I am a few months away from turning 50), but I do have some lines/puffiness in my eye area and a some splotchiness due to sun damage. I had no idea that so many people have had problems with this product, or I would have started using it more sparingly, and will cut back on how much I put on, even though I have had no problems after putting 2 pumps on my face morning and night thus far.
It has already significantly evened out my skin tone, and my eye area is a lot smoother than it was, so I will continue using it and hope that no problems develop.

(93) Bree says:

It is very important to do the patch test before using prevage.
prevage is a very active product and needs to be used in the correct manner.
When using prevage it is important to start by using it ever other evening for one week, then use it every evening for another week, then use it every day and night.
While using prevage you MUST use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 everyday or don’t bother using prevage, it defeats the purpose and you will not see the results you are looking for.
you need to give prevage six to eight weeks in order to see noticable results.
Do not under any circumstance use prevage serum in the eye area.
Elizabeth Arden has a specific product called prevage eye ( it is specifically formulated for the eye area.)
If you have a problem with prevage that you purchased from E.Arden email or mail E.Arden, they are very good about addressing customer complaints.
It is of no benifit to Elizabeth Arden to have unhappy clients.

Help! I am a anti-aging obsessed victim! I use a ton of products and decided to add prevage into the mix both on my face and my chest. Face fine, decollete, horrid, bumpy, red itchy and hot. Will it spread? This was after one 24 hour cycle of use. Is this part of the damage control cycle for sun-damaged skin? Is this just the initial bad before good? Are there any contraindications if also using C creams, glycolic treatments or retin-A? Help!

I have very sensitive skin. I did the Prevage test site as suggested. No reaction, so I tried the product (very sparingly)on my face, neck and chest. The next morning, I woke up with a hive like rash on the areas where I applied the product. My lips are swollen and I developed blisters by my mouth and cheek. I use PREVAGE, infact all 3 lines, for face, eyes and their newest line the night cream. My face has never looked better and I get compliments. I also used to work for Elizabeth Arden and I was the number one seller for Prevage because I believe in the product. Here’s the thing, some people develop allergic reactions to PREVAGE, and that’s going to be the case for any products out there and you will hear more about the negatives than the positives. I had a lot of clients who are happy with the product and see major results. But for those who have had an allergic reaction, then its too bad, the product is not for you. I also highly recommend PREVAGE to those who are in their early 30’s because it is such a wonderful preventative treatment for aging….

i had a free sample of this poduct and used it until it was finished (10 months) and loved it. So bought another one which at first was great. Then at the start of the summer i came out in what I thought could be exma, it was VERY itchy and driving me mad. I didn’t really know what had caused it. I went to the doctor who gave me a cream with hydra cortizone and fungazide in it. within a week the rash had gone and all was good. After six months i thought today I would try using prevage again. Nine hours later my face started to go red and is now burning and blotchy, with, at the moment one blister. I have now realized it is the prevage!

If you can stand another comment. Age 46. Using prevage a few years. It works fine. Never had any sort of reaction. I believe it smooths my skin. In general I have lousy luck with skin products..so by virtue of the fact that this is tolerable, that makes it a miracle.

I have oily skin with breakouts AND wrinkles. Can you beat that bad luck??? The prevage seems to tone the whole evil melange down. Without drying me out too much in winter. I have only used the .05%.

Good luck to all reading. ANd try to get a sample!

(104) Suzy says:

I ahve been using prevage for quite sometime, I guess about 18 months-2 years, and I would not be without it. I use the eye, face and night cream. I cannot wait for the body which should be out shortly. I think a lot of people that have trouble with it are not using it properly. For example, when people say they are having trouble around the eyes, they are probably putting it right on their eyelids and not on the bone around the eye. Also, for some people, they use WAY to much and cause themselves to have a reaction. Test is first!!! Most stores that have it DO have a tester. Put it on in the store, wear it awhile and see how your skin reacts. I am not saying that some people will not have a reaction, but the vast majority of people seem to do well with it and buy more.

It looks like a BUS has hit me today!!!!! Having used Elizabeth Arden’s Prevage last night, I experienced itchyness around my eyes, top lip, forehead & neck. I could barely open my eyes to see the damage Prevage had done. Strangely, this isn’t the first time I have used Prevage. I have been using it for around 4-5 months off & on. However, having changed nothing else in my routine, except for applying this cream – disaster!!!! Beware all potential users. It really is an unpleasant & unwanted reaction to one VERY expensive cream!!! After about 5 weeks of using Prevage MD, I developed a very itchy rash as described by others. Two weeks later (during which I went back to Dermaglow), the aftermath of the rash cleared up. Because this was an expensive product, I thought I’d try it again, just in case the reaction was due to some other factor. But after only one application, I woke up this morning to itchy skin and swollen eyes. I gather I am not alone. I do not have sensitive skin, I do not suffer from allergies, and I have never had such a bad reaction to a skin care product. Too bad, because I do think the product was working.

(113) Hallie says:

P.S. Just for the record I don’t have sensitive skin. I’ve never had a problem with any cosmetic whatsoever. This Prevage must be pretty potent. Again, how long does it take for the rash to go away?

(114) EVELYN DAVIES says:

I was given a sample of this Prevage night cream at Sephora in France. I used it for one night, the following morning when I woke my face had swollen up and it looked like I had been in a boxing match. my skin is red, itchy and 2 days later the swelling has gone down a bit,but my eyes are still swollen and itchy. I would never ever buy or recommend this brand, I am off to the pharmacy tomorrow to see if I can get any advice there to help with the itchiness and redness.

I have been using Prevage for one month and I LOVE IT…my complexion never looked so great! I’m in my fifties and have been getting more compliments than ever! Fine lines are less noticeable, skin in much smoother and brighter! Highly recommend trying this wonderful product!

(116) Kerri says:

I had bought it the first time from my doctor and was very happy. I loved the texture and my skin felt great. I ran out and chose to buy some online for a lower price. I used it for one day and woke up the next day (today)with my face all swollen, red, and itchy. Good thing I had planned on spending New Years at home.

(117) gina says:

I used Prevage MD for a couple of weeks without incident. Then one day I awoke to the usual allergic symptoms: hives, itching, and swelling so bad I called in sick for two days. I was so embarrassed to show my face, but I had to go back to work the third day. I looked like I had gained thirty pounds. Stopped using it for a couple of weeks. Saw my mother last week, and she couldn’t believe how clear my skin looked. Many of the dark spots that used to riddle my face were gone–and I hadn’t noticed. So, I tried Prevage again, sparingly. Same allergic reaction. Such a shame. Wonderful product for two weeks.

(119) Ronel says:

I have been using over-the-counter Prevage face cream (4 weeks) and eye cream (2 weeks), and so far so good. Age spots seem to be fading, but I have yet to see action on the fine lines. I have fair skin and was concerned about the negative reports, but am hoping I will be one of the lucky ones. What’s with the smell, though? Ieck.

(120) Miaow says:

Forgive my ignorance, but is this retinol-based? It’s just that these retinol creams usually give rash-like symptoms that pass as the person adjusts to it.

(121) Ken says:

I may be the only guy on this site that has used Prevage (1%)and like Darlene (5/25/07) I also suffer from seasonal allergies and have sensitive skin. My first 2-3 weeks I experienced some redness and itchiness. On the advice of my Dr. I scaled back my frequency of application and in another 2 weeks I was fine putting it on each day or night. It’s been 3 month’s now and I’m noticing a difference in my skin texture and being in my 50’s I’ll take any improvement! Perhaps this is another example of how our FDA rolls over to big business and let’s products get out to consumers without the thorough testing that they used to do!

(122) lani says:

I was very excited about using the Prevage Treatment and Eye Cream. Unfortunately, not only are my eyes very puffy as a result but it
almost seems as though my face has aged 10 years forward. I pray that this reverses – I have only used it since January 16th 2 times a day. I freaked out when I looked in the mirror a little while ago, I couldn’t get the product off quick enough – I ran to the computer as soon as I got the stuff off and began reading everyone’s comments. I will go back to my old faithful “Nutrimetics” – it is totally natural and never harmed my skin. What was I thinking?

(123) Mary says:

I have such sensitive skin that I break out in a rash even looking at new products. I have a hx of eczema, dermatitis and every allergy under the sun. I have been using prevage for two weeks and find it miraculous.(44 years old) Perhaps I will find a rash in two weeks, but for now I love it.

(124) Nanette says:

I love this product. I’m 57 years old and purchased Prevatge at the Elizabeth Arden Spa in Ft. Lauderdale after having a facial. I have used a tiny pea size application morning and night for the past three months. The improvement in my skin texture, pores, firmness and overall glow has been dramatic. Even my husband commented on how great my skin looks since I’ve been using this product. I have just added the eye serum to my routine and will probably add the over all body lotion too. This stuff is “liquid gold” and I highly recommend it to all of my friends.

(125) Marilyn says:

I have been using Prevage about 2 years now. After the first month my husband said, I don’t know what you are doing, but I want to do it too. I love it. My friends notice a difference in my skin too. Use the eye cream and just started the night. Love them all. Wish the price would come down.

(126) vivian says:

I am from an aisa country. I only developed rashes 7 days after 1 st use of EA Prevage. So at first I didnt know it s Prevage caused me allergy. So after my rashes and itchiness calmed down, i attempted with a very small amount of Prevage again. unfortunately, same awful skin condition happened. And it was even worse than the first time. My skin was really good before I tried Prevage. It really did a lot of damage to my skin. I just came back from the skin centre. And the patch test confirmed that prevage was the culprit for my skin allergy. I ll never ever use EA products again

I have been a long time user of Lancome & thought it was a great line until I decided to try something different. I tried the Prevage and was instantly impressed with the silky smooth texture.I love the way my skin feels. I used to feel occassional dryness but now after using Prevage for 4 months my skin feels more hydrated& smooth than it ever has. No rash or irritations.I LOVE this product. I am turning 50 in 3 months and always get compliments on my skin. It’s worth every penny!!!

(130) ArdenGal says:

First off, not every single person on the planet is going to react the same to any skincare product. For example, Perscriptives doesn’t do anything for me, but I know a lot of people rave about it, my skin burned after using Lancome’s night cream, so to say, Prevage is a total waste of money is ridiculous. Just say it didn’t work for me. Another thing, I’ve noticed a lot of beauty advisors don’t exactly know how to use the product and therefore tell there clients wrong information. Prevage eye: DONT put it on the lid of your eye, ONLY underneath (the skin will circulate the product throughout the pores). Prevage Face: For both the eye and face products its important that you only use ONE pump for the entire face and neck. and ONE pump for both eyes. Using anything more will result in an allergic reaction to sensitive skin. Now if one has done these things, then yes the product is not for you, but give it a shot, and if you’re worried about how it will react, then give it a test, put a tab of it everyday for a week on the inner side of your elbow, if your skin reacts, DONT put it on your face, otherwise more likely than not, you’ll be safe if it doesn’t react. Try it out, its a great product for me.

I have been using Prevage face and eye cream for over a month. There is a marked difference in my skin tone and reduction of fine lines. I love the feel of this product on my skin, as well as the pleasant scent. I use my normal moisturizer over this product in the morning and evening. It is the first product that I have felt was worth the money.

Love Prevage!!!I am on my second bottle and hope I never ever run out! It has evened out my skin tone. Leaves it feeling smooth and gives great coverage with a slight brownish tone. I wear it to bed at night and have skipped a few nights when I’ve been too tired. Boy, is it noticible, so I’ve gone right back. Problem – it is way too expensive and when I do run out, I doubt I can afford more. Hope they bring the price down, please, please.

(134) Rebecca says:

I used Prevage, a gift from my mother. I loved it but I did notice an itching on my neckline. I just put up with it, after it was gone the itching went away, too. Maybe that area is too delicate to apply it? But, I really loved the product!

Love it and have recommended it without doubts.

how ’bout a comment from a dude? i’m 39 and my beautiful younger wife uses EA products [particularly the body lotion]. with her purchase she received some samples of other EA products. being a slightly vain man, i thought i’d give the eye stuff a try. i did the inner arm test for just a day and had put the product on my eyes in the morning. thinking more is better, i put more product on the same evening. in the morning my eyes were puffy/swollen like i had been crying for weeks on end. no rash. no itch. this is good. i’m on day two with no product and my face doesn’t look like it’s melting quite as bad. on the other hand, my girlfriend loves the body lotion… so a positive and a negative review in the same comment.

Please use caution when using this product. I had a severe reaction after just one use. I had to go to the doctor, my face and eyes were swollen. My face looked like a bad sunburn. It took over a week before the the red and rash started to go away. Never had a reaction to any products before.

I have used Prevage for over 2 years and love it. I started with the .5% and thought I might have a reaction because I have VERY sensitive skin. I started out every other night for 2 weeks and then every day after that. On the third bottle I switched to the MD version and still no bad reaction. Good product for me.

I have used prevage md for the last three years and I LOVE IT!!! I was trying to save money and purchased a wrinkle product from olay. I have used Prevage off and on for several months. I bought mine at Ulta, so don’t know if it’s .5 or 1%. It is fantastic. I LOVE the way my skin looks, feels and radiates. I can’t believe so many ladies developed a rash. I wish I could buy up all of your unused Prevage. It is sooo expensive. That’s why I say I’ve used it off and on. Wish it was affordable for the every day woman. I’m in my 50’s.

(145) Treesa says:

I was told that it causes allergic reactions in a few people but I was able to test it first with an esthetician and had no reaction. I have been using the product for two weeks and my skin is better than it’s been in years. I am not breaking out and my pores are less noticable. I was told it heals skin at a cellular level with anti-oxidants and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Just test a sample on the inside of your arm first.

thanks everyone for posting your comments. so thankful I found this site. Was resarching where to buy Prevage. I just saw a program on pay tv that endorsed this product and was so excited. (Professor Regan’s Beauty Parlour). She is a well respected medical expert. The research showed that it was very effective in her experiment. I have very sensitive skin. the rash you talk about happens to me from many products. I am narrowing it down to those that include parabens. I think it best I just stay away from Prevage. I will stick to a wonderful natural product made in Western Australia called Carolines Cream – made especially for those with excema and sensitve skin. You lucky girls that can handle the product. Thx again for all the info.

I love this product (so far). I am using a sample with gift w/ purchase. I put it on at night only. I have very fair, dry, acne-prone skin. I have to be careful about EVERYTHING I put on my face. This product has reduced the puffiness and lines in two weeks time. I wonder if I’m going to break out soon but seems to be an extreme here, works or really doesn’t work.

April 17, 2009 at 7:17 pm
(151) Kimberly says:

Prevage is not to be taken lightly. I’m sorry you had such a crappy experience with it, but if you had bought it in a department store the ladies at the counter, hopefully, would have told you how it should be used. YOU NEED TO TEST PREVAGE ON A SMALL SPOT ON YOUR FACE FIRST. EVEN PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN HAVE REACTIONS TO IT because of the idebenone. And if you have no reaction it is still recommended that you slowly introduce your skin to it. Some people just can’t use it. And even if you can, many people break out very badly the first few weeks of use. So before using Prevage be sure to speak with a professional about it, preferably someone not at the Elizabeth Arden counter, but somewhere like Shopper Drug Mart where they deal with multiple products. And if your face had such a bad reaction, I’m not surprised it didn’t work on your arms. Prevage is actually a great product, for those of use who are fortunate enough to be able to use it.

(152) Gee says:

Most of these comments do not distinguish between the eye cream and the face cream. I am thinking of purchasing the eye cream for dark circles as it was recommended to me. The woman in the department store said a sunscreen should be used in conjuction with the face cream. Could this be the reason so many people are breaking out in a rash? I would like to hear specific comments about the Prevage EYE cream from anyone who has used it. Thanks

(153) Leslie Holley says:

I think I know what the problem is with people who break out due to this product. In Style put out a book called Getting Gorgeous and this product was mentioned and tauted for excellent results. It contains Idebenone, a newly discovered super-antioxidant which was originally used to treat Alzheimer’s. Studies have shown it to be more effective than Vitamin C, Co-enzyme Q10, Kinetin, and alpha-lipoic acid. I believe it is the only over-the-counter product that contains it. This is probably causing the reactions as it appears to be pretty strong and just think what a little pure retinol can do to some people. I haven’t used it yet but am going to try it. I don’t have sensitive skin so hopefully I won’t have any problems. Hope this helps.

(155) Marja says:

I am 56 years old now. Have been taking really good care of my skin since my 18th. Used a lot of high end products over the years, such as la Prairie skincare routines. Lately, I noticed that this didn’t do anything for my skin anymore. So, tried the EA Prevage. And it really makes a diff. More glow, less duller skin, less wrinkles. Even the deeper wrinkles from nose downwards, appear to become less. I do take good care in using a moisturizer with sunscreen on top of the serum. Now I am wondering, is it maybe even better to buy the 1% instead of the EA ? If so, where can I buy this. I live in the Netherlands by the way. So am depending, in this case, probably on online buying possibilities. Thnx for your advice !

I used Prevage two nights ago and now my face is red, itchy, and spotted. It looks and feels horrible! My skin is pretty sensitive in general. I wish I had looked online and seen all of the posts regarding allergic reactions to Prevage. I could have patch tested before I applied it to my face. This stuff is going into the garbage can. The only compensation is that I didn’t pay for it, as it was given to me by my friend who works in a Dermi-Spa. I will let her know what this product did to my skin. If your skin is sensitive, BEWARE!

About twice a year I go to a spa for a full body skin treatment. When I come out of the spa, my skin is so soft and smooth – but it doesn’t last for long :(

When I saw an ad for Prevage, I thought I might give it a try. So I bought some (at Nordstroms)and I tested first to make sure I had no allergic reaction. I did not.

After just one week of using the product my skin felt and looked just like I’d come out of the spa treatment. So — I love this stuff, and will certainly continue to use it.

LOVE IT. I should totally document the changes occurring cuz I can tell the difference already. I have fair, freckley, pale, kinda sensitive and acne prone skin. I have big pores and I have a lot of sun damage from being a beach baby. No rashes have developed at all. Just tighter pores, glowing firmer skin and I think I can already see a diminished look in my frown lines

June 18, 2009 at 3:14 pm
(161) BW says:

Oh and btw, I use the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Face treatment which I believe is the .5% version. I don’t use the prevage eye because I do have a very delicate eye area and I think it maybe irritated me but also i was putting it too close to the eyeball area I realized. I might try it again but just putting it on the ocular bone like the E. Arden ladies suggest. But yeah, the face treatment is WICKED AWESOME and my pores are looking amazing.

I did a patch test and there was no reaction. I then used the prevage and my face is swollen, red and itchy. I have been taking benadryl all day and it doesn’t seem to be helping. How long has it taken some of you to see this allergy disappear? My eyes are practically swollen shut. I used the yellow and the smallest amount for fear of an allergy. The Prevage is one product I swear by and offer skin care advice for all my customs to use. I have an article that will talk about the Prevage since I am the Examiner Anti-Aging Skin Care Column Writer, perhaps the women here would like to read.

All skin care products should be used only according to the label and manufacturing companies directions always. Never used in conjuntion of another new skin care product or a the same time as Retinols.

(169) Jane says:

I tried both the Prevage (from derm office) and Prevage Eye. The facial Prevage gave me a horrible breakout- skin itchy, irritable, almost cyst-like breakout. One salesperson at a cosmetics counter told me it was the skin ‘getting used to it.’lol. I stopped using it and it took 2 weeks but my skin went back to normal. I went back to skinceuticals C with Ferulic, which works just fine.
Prevage Eye? I actually went thru an entire tube of it.. then noticed how dry and wrinkly my eye area looked- UGH. I think it was causing inflammation that actually made me look older. I discontinued it and switched to another product.. the problem went away. I think the prob is this is a new substance- not found in other skincare- so how would a person know if they are going to react to it before they try it? And it does seem to be quite allergenic to a lot of people, not to mention the high price.

(175) Donnalee says:

I’ve been using Prevage for over 3 years and love the results. I am 56. 5 months ago I gradually began having whelps all over my neck that itched like crazy. I had one large crusty patch on my left temple. I want to my dermatologist and he diagnosed it as contact dermatitis. We went over the usual: doing or eating anything different. I received a Kenalog injection and steroid cream and was fine. I stopped using Prevage for a week and no more eruptions, but that could have been do to all the steroids. I DID NOT WANT TO BE ALLERGIC TO PREVAGE. Over the next few months I used Prevage sparingly but continued with the whelps….now it progressed to bilstery red itchy areas all around my hair line and forehead…….more steroids. Finally, about 3 weeks ago, I began getting more breakouts on my forehead and neck, but began feeling a tingling feeling in my lips and got little pink dots around my lips…NO SWELLING……WHAT WAS FRIGHTENING WAS MY THROAT BEGAN TIGHTENING AND I HAD TO CALL 911 AND RECEIVED IV BENADRY. I do want to say, I never had issues with my eyes or cheeks. I had what was considered chest pressure with warmth and did not connect the use of Prevage. I am healthy with no heart history with negative risk factors. There was no problems with my heart. I had another reaction and was in the hospital for 2 days of testing. They were afraid of heart issues and did more intense testing. My heart is just fine! I did not want to be allergic to it because it works so well! I figured since I had used this product for years it was safe. I am going for three days of allergy testing. I will definitely find out if I am indeed allergic to Prevage……….Could anyone please share with me if they had any dangerous side effects such as throat tightening? I have never been allergic to anything is my life. I am a nurse practitioner who consults in healthcare education including anti-aging. Please help!

I am currently having a reaction to Allergan, Prevage MD. It didn’t show up immediately after application but has been worsening the days since. My whole face is puffy, red, and blistering with small itchy, stingy, bumps all over my face. It seemed to burn my whole face–my lip line has small blisters on it as well. I am soooo grateful I did not put this on my eye lids or brow area. I called the help line and am returning the bottle to my dermatologist for a full refund. Be cautious when using this product and test an area first–and then EASE into use. I used this product twice before without reaction so I applied on my whole face thinking I was fine with it. Obviously, that was not the case. Ugghhh!

I was recommended to purchase and use Prevage MD to by my dermatologist. I have very sensitive skin (which they knew) and am allergic to Sulfa (which they knew). The nurse tried some on the top of my hand. The first time I used a pea sized amount of this on my face/neck I immediately had a beet red face and very bad burning sensation. I washed it off several times. I went to an after hours clinic and was told I had an acute rash and was given a shot and Medrol Dose Pack. The clinic doctor told me he was glad I came in as it could have gone systemic. It is 5 days after this pea sized amount was on my face and neck and my face is still burning. I was not given the Prevage MD pamphlet although I took one when I went back to the dermatologist’s office. I do not know why I was not told to test it on a small area especially because I have such sensitive skin and am allergic to sulfa. The complex packaging that it came in I could not read the writing on the plastic case as it is in either gray or white letters even with my glasses on. Please this may be a wonderful product but DO NOT USE ON YOUR WHOLE FACE before testing it on one small area.

Some girl at Macys told me it would reduce the redness I have for a scar on my neck. At $155, I am naturally skeptical and based on the comments here about irritation, it seems my skepticism is probably warranted and haven’t bought it.

I went to my dermatologist because I have very very sensitive skin and wanted her to recommend something that I could use on my face for a moisturizer. I TOLD HER that I was allergic to penicillin and sulfa and also wrote it down. They recommended Prevage M.D. All I was told was to use a pea sized portion on my face and neck (1 pea sized portion) every other day for the first 2 weeks. Immediately after I put one pea sized portion on my face and neck my whole face turned beet red. For nine days my face burned and felt like it was on fire. When I called her at home she blew me off and told me to take a Benadryl and cortisone cream. I had to go to a clinic who diagnosed me with an “Acute rash”. He said that if I had not come in this rash could have gome systemic. I had to have 2 shots of steroid, I am on on steroid pills, I am on a morning anti histamine and on a nightly anti histamine. Nine days after this terrible ordeal my face has stopped burning but now because of the steroid pills is all puffy. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING. I WENT TO A DERMATOLOGIST. WHAT DID SHE NOT UNDERSTAND I HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN AND I AM ALLERGIC TO SULFA. I went online and the above were two things that should have told the physician not to recommend this to me.

I worked for Elizabeth Arden years ago and fell in love with their skincare. They offered products that were miraculous for me. I have very oily skin and was prone to break outs and redness. One thing I liked about the company was that they didn’t advertise as much as others did and spent more time researching and developing their products and often patented their ingredients. Anyhoo being a long time skin care enthusiast, Prevage has been another one of their products I am extremely happy with. I turn 50 the end of this year and most people think that I am 35 and I just love that. I do not come from the perfect gene pool of youth as both my sis and mom look older than they should for their age and both do not use a quality skin care defense system, so for me the proof is in the product! I currently work as a makeup artist for a leading cosmetics company in the industry and see all kinds of skin. One thing I can say is that great make up starts with great skin. The clients I encounter using topical solutions from their dermatologists have some of the worst skin I’ve seen. They usually are red, ruddy, dried out and sensitive. Makes me wonder what their skin was like before using such products that these results are an improvement. Also with prescribed type of products, it you do experience any adverse reactions you’re stuck with it as well as the expense whereas over the counter cosmeceuticals (which at one time were pharmaceuticals) can be returned with a 21 day or so trial (depends on store) so you have nothing to lose financially. Granted, people using high quality skin care for the first time will experience some sensitivity to a new product do to the skin making adjustments to your new treatment and it is common to become somewhat worse before better. This is normal. So hang in there with whatever you’re trying and give it a fair chance before throwing in the towel. Styles and trends come and go but your face is with you always so be persistent and put your best face forward :) .

I am very upset that my dermatologist recommended this for me even though she knew that I already had just about every thing that the company stated in their brochure (that I was not given or told about) that could very possibly cause adverse side effects. The reason I was there in the first place was because of my sensitive skin, many many allergies, unable to use most cosmetics and facial creams. WHAT WAS SHE THINKING. One small pea sized portion over my face and neck caused an immediate burning on my face. My whole face burned for weeks. My dermatologist told me “Well I am allergic to Sulfa and I have no problems with using Prevage M.D.” I could not believe that she did this. It is 3 weeks out and I am just starting to get better after 2 cortisone shots, dose pak and 2 weeks on Prednisone pills. Numerous dermatologist appointments, one emergency clinic appt where the doctor told me that this could have gone systemic (I called the dermatologist telling her I was having an allergic reaction and she told me “Take a Benadryl and use cortisone cream you will be fine” WELL I WAS NOT FINE. Thank goodness the after hours clinic doctor was intelligent enough to prescribe an immediate shot and dose pak. Now I have to go to another dermatologist to see if this has caused any lasting damage. I AM VERY VERY ANGRY!

Prevage is wonderful! I started using it on my neck after I lost a lot of weight and had no reactions. About 4 months after using it consistently I realized how great my neck looked. Skin was smoother, more taut, and no wrinkles! Now I wear my hair up and necklacs all the time!

Used x 2. Slight itchiness with first application. After 2nd application, moderately severe swelling under eye and whole cheek area bilaterally. 4 days post-use and I still have swelling. Am taking antihistamines around the clock and applying ice packs throughout the day. Allergies to Prevage are COMMON! Would never use again! There are better products with less potential to cause major problems like swelling, redness, itching, etc.

Can certainly empathize with Sarah. This stuff is the pits. I have never had any type of reaction like this. I will never use this product again and will warn others not to use it.

I also used Pervage for several months before I had a severe alergic reaction. I also got tightening of the throat, welts under the eyes and blisters all over my face. I’ve never had any reactions to any creams. Very expenseive cream for me to purchase. Has anyone gotten compensation. I’d take a gift certificate for the value for any other Elizabeth Arden products.

If I had come to this website before trying Prevage, I never would have! However, I received a few samples of Prevage in Bloomingdales, used them without any skin tests, and really noticed that my skin looked better than usual without any negative side effects. I am in my mid-50’s and very fortunate to have outstanding skin to begin with. I also received samples of the Prevage undereye treatment which I was not as impressed with, since I found it to be a bit dry. Strivectin eye with the Prevage day and Peter Thomas Roth Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion (SPF 30) on top worked very well for me. Prevage night cream is good too but was a little heavy. However, my skin felt very soft and smooth in the morning. I’m surprised to read about the reactions that everyone is having because my skin is usually very sensitive. Bloomingdales will allow you to return the product if you have a reaction to it. If you don’t have acne, I definitely think it is worth a try.

I used Prevage and it was a great product. I used it for about 6 months. People started to notice before I did. I had comments of how pretty my skin was and how young I looked. I had no problem whatsoever. I loved it.

Have used Prevage and prevage for eyes since they came out with no problems at all. And I really do have a sensitive skin. About once a year I use MD Prevage (applied once a day), again with no side effects. So, I am a happy customer and cannot understand how all these people get rashes.

I received a sample of prevage . My skin became so clear
that I could go entirely without makeup. I have now been using Prevage face for years. It is fabulous! I never ever had a rash. However I did have a big problem with my eyes -severe dryness- only because I was using too much Prevage eye and it got into my eyes.
I do not use Prevage at night only in the daytime or I use the Prevage night cream.
