Huge kudos to the folks at Dove, who've created perhaps the best commercial of 2006 (watch it here). The film, which has been viewed almost 300,000 times on YouTube, features a rather plain-looking model (pictured at left, in a screen grab) who is first transformed by a bevy of makeup artists and hair stylists and then touched up by computer -- neck elongated, eyes enlargened, lips puffed up. The end result is her magnificent mug (pictured, right) rising above pedestrians on a giant billboard. Dove has created a program to boost teens' self-esteem, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund. Watch the film, share it with those you love, and comment below if it affected you in any way.

Great website. As a Certified Image Consultant, I try very hard to help people actually “SEE” the beauty that I see when I work with them. EVERYONE has some part of them that is beautiful! The challange is to actually see it and believe it to be true!

As a writer, I work with graphic artists and I’ve seen how they can photoshop anything in to improve one’s looks, and I wanted to prove that I wasn’t just being catty. What great ad, I sent it also to a few of my friend’s teen daughters, I sure wish they had this campaign when I was a teen! I’d have been much less stressed about looking “perfect”!

I also showed this to my husband to prove that it’s not just ME who takes a lot of work to look good when we go out, and also to demonstrate how those women in ads are doctored up. Thanks for a great ad!!

Wow,its very had to believe that is the same girl in both pictures! No wonder so many women have a low body image when we compare oursleves to these pictures of models wih full make up and hair done and airbrushing. We need to learn that everyone is beautiful and indivual!

Great program/add, if only they had this kind of thing for kids of both genders. Though boys do not wear makeup, their body image is influenced by ads of young men with rock hard bodies, perfect skin and hair etc. I’m glad the girls are taken care of, now what about our sons?

I absolutely love this commercial! The world’s perception of real beauty is distorted, as was my own for a long time. I commend Dove for their work and efforts to boost young girls self esteems. And I believe this clip truly speaks louder than simply telling them that models aren’t perfect or that they’re photo shopped. Keep up the great work! :)
