Do You Look Better Long or Short?

By September 26, 2006

Follow me on:

Some women just look better with short hair and I think I may be one of them. Going short, however, is a hard decision to make because 1. most men prefer long hair, 2. short hair hasn't been trendy in oh-so-long, 3. maintaining a short cut is a pain in the you-know-what.

Just for fun I decided to brainstorm with a friend the celebrities who look better short and long. This is what we came up with:

Celebs Who Look Best Short Natalie Portman, Kristen Dunst, Halle Berry, Winona Ryder, Cate Blanchett, Sharon Stone.

Celebs Who Look Better Long Sienna Miller, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera.

Disagree? Agree? Want to ream me out for making the comment about men? Comment below.

I overall feel Nicole looks better with her bob styled hair.

(3) Katie says:

I really Loved Halle Berry with her short pixie cut the best!;)Please halle, chop your hair, or at least take out those horrible extensions.
Your face Halle is much to pretty to hide with long hair!
Love, Katie;)

(4) Katie says:

I love Kirsten Dunst with bob styled hair alot!

(5) Katie says:

Natalie Portman is so Beautiful.
She rocks the shaved head, as well as her pixie cut now!
Keep rocking, Natalie!;)

(6) Jennifer Vazquez says:

you are absolutely correct! I look WAY better with short hair but I always feel incomplete or unsexy toward men who TOTALLY love long flowing hair. When I grow my hair, it is fine and gets knotted easily. It looks good for like 5 seconds and I end up wearing it in a pony most. With my short hair, I get more compliments from women and men and my husband loves it. So I’m done with long hair!

Hi, My name is katie;)
I am a natural redhead. I look just as pretty with long locks, as with my now rocking bob style. I cut my own hair, no.. I’m NOT a professional, just love playing with the scissors LOL;)
I am 35 and a half!
I am so over long hair. I have thick hair. I love wash, gel and go hair.
I can’t stand the knots, and dry ends with all the longer hair!
P.S. we are living in the 21st century people.
I am to bored with long hair,.. Short hair suits my life, and sassy fun personality best. PP>S> My Newlywedded Husnband Steve loves my shorter hair too.;)
Love, Katie;)

(10) Lisa says:

I definitely think it takes a special “look” to be able to successfully pull off short hair. Halle Berry is the best example, although she looks awesome regardless of how her hair looks. I do like Sienna Miller with short hair and think Natalie Portman looks better with long, but that’s just my opinion. Personally, I’ve done both and perfer my hair longer. I’ve got a very tight natural curl but my hair is thin. Regardless of how I have it cut or what the length is, it pretty much does what it wants to, so it’s a moot point.

October 2, 2006 at 1:19 pm
(11) Deb says:

I agree with you 100% / I’ve since grown out my hair after 10 years and miss the ease of the short cut but don’t miss having to get it cut every month. The one thing about longer hair is the versatility of style.

October 2, 2006 at 1:42 pm
(12) Katie says:

I can see why women vasalate with the Long Vs. Short hair styles.
I know a week ago when I had longer hair I was into putting it up alot, but got tired of that too.
I really love the ease and fun I have with shorter hair!
I am so blessed with a shiny, naturally beautiful head of Redhair!
My sister In law, has always been a bottle Redhead.
I have a twin sister, who refuses to go short. She looks drab, and older with her longer hair. Opps,..don’t tell her I said that. I love Barb (my Twin), but we have such different opinions about lots of stuff, and I’m more of a spirited type(if you will).
I love being a goofball, and a bit fun, and fiesty too.
Ultimately, You have to feel good about yourself, no matter what your hair length is, ok ladies!
Love, Katie;)

(13) Lori says:

I agree men tend to like longer hair – I’ve had it both ways (longer now), and my husband is VERY opinionated (but he’s also opinionated about my clothes, etc., as well). I like having longer hair because it’s easier to pull it back and put it up in warmer weather – and it covers your ears in cold weather. Some women can pull off any hair style (especially those who have help styling it!). I’ve never been very “handy” with my hair and just find having it longer is easier for me. And the hair pieces they are making now are becoming very reasonable and look pretty realistic for those who prefer short most of the time and who don’t want to go to the expense and commitment of extensions.

(14) KarenAnn says:

I think Winona Ryder looks better with long hair, but either way she is beautiful.

October 2, 2006 at 2:10 pm
(15) Katie says:

I think Wynonna Ryder looks best in shaggy short styles. In fact when i was 23yr.s, I saw Wynonna Ryder on the cover of Vougue Magazine, and I cut my hair super short, and dyed it dark brown to copy her style.
But on a blind date, a guy randomly said I reminded him of Shannon Daughtery, UGH, not what I wanted to hear. I know Shannon is pretty, I guess I have similar high cheeckbones to Shannon, rather than look like Wynonna Ryder.
Oh well, It was afaze. But the next day literally 99% of people said my hair looked great short. It was previously below shoulder length…LOL… Those were the days,…
I am totally loving my short hair again, Now I’m 35yr.s!
I love being a free spirit with my hair!
Love, Katie;)

(16) Lou says:

totally agree with your assesment.

i had long hair for years. it was very thick and full and i loved it. then i took some medicine and half my hair fell out. so i decided to go short – I mean boy-short. now it frames my face and eyes SO much better i would never go back. the key is to get the perfect cut. you know when people ask if you’ve lost weight and you haven’t dropped a pound you’ve got the perfect cut!

October 2, 2006 at 3:27 pm
(17) Katie says:

Listen, I know what it’s like to lose your hair on meds.
However, I have since changed my meds.
I was losing too much weight, and feeling nausesous too.
I believe beauty is so individual, I hate tradition, if you will. I mean we are in 2006!
God Loves You so who cares if nobody else likes your hair. I realize more people accept others despite their hair styles, however hair is such a touchy topic.
May God Bless You All!
Love, Katie;)

(18) JUDY K. says:

To the lady Judi who is 66 & wants to know if she should cut her hair because her daughter wants her to..it should be your decision. You should go by how your hair looks on you & what condition it is in. I prefer long hair. I’m 50 & it usually looks good but due to a long illness it became dry so instead of going real short it hits my shoulders & I had to add somelayers. But I prefer it longer with bangs that I brush back. Some women don’t look too good with super short hair. It depends on your face shape too. I’m not the type of lady to spend hrs. on my hair either. But it is nice to be able to wear it loose or put it in a barret or ponytail. Thanks for reading this & have a wonderful day! Judy K. from Chicago

(19) Megan Romer says:

Having very curly hair, I actually find that longer hair is actually lower-maintenance for me, and therefore looks consistently better. When my hair is short, I need lots of product and have to spend quite a bit of time styling it so it doesn’t end up being a ridiculous puffball. When it’s longer, its own weight holds it in nice, consistent curls.

I tend to go back and forth though… every few years I’ll chop it into a layered bob, and then let it grow to about halfway down my back, and then start again.

October 2, 2006 at 7:28 pm
(20) Carla says:

I am also past a big zero age but don’t look my age, except that I am getting some “railroad-track” lines around my mouth. I have worn my hair one length, just above my shoulders, with a deep side wave for many years. I always end up going back to it whenever I do make a change. However, it has thinned out quite a bit over the top, due to medications. So, I am debating as to what style would work the best for me.

October 2, 2006 at 7:49 pm
(21) JJ says:

my cosmetologist friend says that anybody with thin hair should go short. For men, they should go crewcut short. It bounces up more instead of hanging down with the scalp more visible.

(22) Katie says:

Well, I have days when I hate my hair, and days when i think I look awesome, as we all do.
However, I don’t regret cutting my hair.
I feel I look very pretty as i am.
P.S. Natalie portman granted looked great with her longer hair, But my Fav was natalies Bob style for her role in the movie “Closer”.
Love, Katie;)

(23) Jan says:

I always wanted long hair, and my mother always made me keep it short. She still complains about my hair now that it is longer! I was extremely ill this past spring, and had two surgeries back to back, and started losing hair by the handfulls. I lose a lot anyway, due to my meds, but this was overkill. I was unable to get to a hair sylist for 6 months, and it was overgrown, with no style and split ends like crazy! The first thing I did when I was able to get out was get it cut in long layers and colored. I love the layers, I can have it long with the ability to let it air dry, and it brought up my natural curl. She also got me on some shampoo and scalp treatment that has helped the hair loss. I’ll never go back to long hair without long layers. For my fine hair, it really helps.

No way, Sienna Miller looks better with shorthair….

October 7, 2006 at 5:49 pm
(25) Rosalind says:

Most of the celebrities you mentioned who look good in short hair, I think also look good in long hair. At least that is my opinion. I think it should be a woman’s own choice whether her hair should be short, medium length or long. I agree with some of the people who commented that it depends on the shape of the face. Some women with really great facial features can pull it off with a very short hairstyle. I do think though that those women are in the minority. I think it’s fine to change the hairstyle from time to time, whether it’s short, medium or long. Thank goodness there is such a thing called a wig! They come in all types of lengths, and colors and easier on the hair then extensions.

(26) Barbara says:

I’d rather had not had my hair cut.

February 1, 2007 at 8:46 am
(27) Bryn says:

I go back and forth with my hair as well, and I prefer it short, even tho some styles DON’T look good with glasses, So what I do is I buy Halloween wigs (after halloween when you can get them for like $1 – $2) and cut one to match a style I want to try and try it on, sometimes I really like it and sometimes I don’t, but at least I can see before hand. I tend to look better with extremely short hair and my husband is now loving it, Not as much as the Long(it use to be past my butt) but he’ll live and get over it, I am the one that lives with it and it is so darn thick that my neck use to hurt daily. So follow your own heart and do what you feel will make you most comfortable, Short has never been OUT, people just quick cutting their hair. :)

(28) Bob says:

ALL of the women mentioned look FAR better with long hair, esp. Sharon Stone and Winona. I think Lea Thompson looked better with a pixie, but it’s hard to think of others. Maybe Charlize? I think women work hard convincing each other that trendy cuts look great, but in this guys eyes, they usually range from decent to dreadful.

March 18, 2007 at 7:56 pm
(29) Amy says:

I think winona and sharon look gorgeous with short hair and now winona has grown it she blends in with the crowd and looks boring. To the lady who doesnt know whether to cut her hair I say don’t let other ppl or your daughter influence you either way. It’s your hair and if you like it long keep it long. If you think short hair would suit then get it cut. I have short hair and I LOVE it. It suits my face so well. I’ve found that I get tons more compliments on the way I look now. One thing that is odd is that I’ve found that the type of men who want to know me now are completely different to the type who wanted to know me when I had long hair. It’s hair psychology. lol I’ve found in my experience the type of men who like short hair are more interested in who you are and like independace in women and the type who think women should all have long hair tend to be (sorry to say it) but sleazy, shallow and not really the intellectual type. They can’t think outside of the square. This is just from my experience though coz I’ve been paying particular attention over the years to this male attitude in society.

(30) Monique says:

All of the women that were mentioned who looked better with short hair, all I can say is I couldn’t agree with you more. So many female celebrities are sporting “long” hair. After awhile, it seems as if all of the hairstyles starts to look the same. That’s why I love Halle Berry, Natalie Portman and Winona Ryder when they had their hair cut short. It made them stand out from everyone else that had long cascading hair down their backs. After awhile it can get boring to see the same styles over and over. It’s as if society and men are telling women, “You can ONLY be feminine, attractive and sexy with long hair.” I totally disagree. Women who can pull off short cropped styles sends a message that you can still be feminine, attractive, sexy and confident.

May 8, 2007 at 4:52 am
(31) Monique says:

I wanted to add that, I totally agree with you Amy! I had long hair for quite some time and any man that approached me was only interested in me because of the way I “looked”. It was never about them wanting to get to know me as a “person.” Now, I have my hair cut short. (In the Halle Berry pixie do). I get alot of compliments from men and women. Yet, the type of men that approach me now are totally different than the ones who had approached me before when I had the long hair. These guys seem more upfront, honest, serious and it doesn’t seem as if they have an ulterior motive, (if you klnow what I mean?). I love the short cut and I plan on keeping it for awhile. :0)

(32) Liza says:

I looooove my short hair(it is the Halle cut), although there are other actresses that can pull off the short hair, ie. Malinda Williams and Charlize Theron. I would love to have long hair, but my hair is thin and doesn’t grow that long, so I keep it short. My hubby likes it short, too. I get soo many compliments on my hair from men and women. And if I get extentions to try to experiment, many are glad that i take them out, saying that it looks better shorter. When I wear the long hair, I feel like I am hiding. And I do attract the men that seem shallow, almost like they are hitting on you, because of your hair. I hate that feeling! When I wear my hair short, when they hit on me, I feel like it is because I have a beautiful face. I feel more beautiful, sexy, confident, and smart with my short hair. As for actresses, Ms. Berry could do without the weave. She was short hair. She has done what few women in Hollywood could achieve, hold beauty and sex appeal at it’s heights, and leave the symbol of femininety at the door-hair.

June 23, 2007 at 1:48 pm
(33) Wiglett says:

Liza, I couldn’t agree with you more. Halle Berry needs to lose the extensions.

I agree that all the above mentioned stars look better with short hair. I also think Marissa Hartigay, Cameron Diaz and Lauren Holly are way more smokin’ with short do’s.

I recently decided to get my hair cut short after years of long hair, but ended up with a hideous mullet. I’m so depressed I want to crawl in a hole. I feel sorry for my poor husband who has to look at me.

Halle is gorgeous and can rock a short cut. I, on the other hand, cannot.

July 6, 2007 at 10:18 am
(34) zara says:

I’ve changed my style lots of times the colours as well. The shortest cut i ever got was chin level which i thought was cool but i weighed more, it made my face too chubby. Now a slim UK size 8 again i’m thinking of cutting it short to that level again. I love long and thinks it’s more beautiful then short but when i see short hair on stars like Victoria Beckham or someone i think i want that cut!The cut i like of Victoria is the one she had before the blonde one she has recntly and the brown bob she had in her spice girl days. If i do decide to cut it short next month and i don’t like i’ll just get hair extensions on and wear wigs lol

(35) Michele Malec says:

Oh my gosh, Short hair on most women is oh so cute! It shows that they have style and are really willing to make a statement. Long hair looks cheesy and dated.

August 22, 2007 at 6:24 am
(36) Terry says:

I really like the hair style that Elizabeth Shue had in “Hollow Man”. It Is a wavy bob that looks incredibly hot!

August 26, 2007 at 6:47 pm
(37) rachel says:

I needed my hair to be short but i dance and it most of the time needs to be in a bun.So one day i decided that i would ask my hair dresser to cut my hair as short as possible but have it still go up in a pony tail. It worked and looks great!

November 26, 2007 at 10:27 am
(38) sneha says:

hey short hair is the best & cool.even i have short hair,it is awesum.if ur next going 2 a haircut cut it short & see the difference.telling again short hair is the best

January 23, 2008 at 4:33 pm
(39) Bob says:

It IS amusing to me to think of how different men would respond to the lists. I think that women love the short haircuts on some stars b/c they wish they could look that good with hair that cropped. IMO, even those who do look good, like Halle, catapult off the beauty charts with flowing hair!

January 23, 2008 at 4:38 pm
(40) Bob says:

And oh, BTW, Mariska Hargitay’s cut was one of the worst decisions ever, ranking with Keri Russell’s and Courtney Thorne Smith’s. Horrendous.

January 26, 2008 at 4:22 pm
(41) Once Cute says:

Gotta say, Bob, like so many other things we do to look good for you guys, the hair is a lotta darned work! I live in FL, have thick, heavy, shoulder-length hair cut in layers, and the humidity and heat here make it almost impossible to get it completely dry, let alone have a great do from a.m. to p.m. And the afternoon showers during rainy season? Forget doing ANYthing with your hair. Product is not a solution–it makes my hair even heavier. I currently have longer hair b/c my BF thinks short hair is butch. Fact is, I have pretty green eyes, a nice jawline and neck, and look fabulous with short hair showing off these features. As I am in my 40s, my longer hair is starting to “pull” my face down as my GFs say. So, better with long hair? Not me. Going back to the short, short, short hair that is manageable in this climate and that truly looks good on me.

Someone told me once that men who like long hair need something they can grab so they can drag a woman back to their cave after they’ve clubbed her on the head. Not sure I agree, but funny, all the same.

April 20, 2009 at 4:01 pm
(42) Amber says:

In my opinion long hair is sooo over rated.
To me women look more womanly with shorter
hair and look more girlish with it long.
Men like women looking sexy they dont care the length of a women’s hair. Rihanna is the
perfect example of this because in the beginning of her career she had these dreadful
extensions that made her look cute but when she chopped them off it seemed the next day
she was considered one of the sexiest women alive.
